The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell Amazon Price: $8.99
Customer Review: With 900 other reviews, I'll keep this one short. The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell is an enormously interesting read. It tries to answer the question why and how certain ideas 'tip'. How they spread and become popular. Malcolm uses a huge amount of interesting stories from different domains to try to make his points. For me, the collection of stories was probably more interesting than the points he tried to make. The stories were well written.
Related to tipping, he argues that there are three rules related to an social epidemic. The law of the few (a few people can have a huge impact), the stickiness factor (a message can be constructed to be more sticky) and the power of context (the context can influence the message which is being spread enormously). The rest of the book contains chapters related to each of these rules. Every chapter summarizes the rules and tells stories of where the rule applied.
Tipping Point is extremely well written and easy to read. The bunch of amazing stories make it fun and it's no wonder that it's one a major best sellers in the world. I found the message the author tries to communicate less interesting, though. Never the less, I'd recommend the book to everyone for the sake of the stories and the learning that can be taken out of every individual story.
Everything Bad is Good for You by Steven Johnson Amazon Price: $10.20
Customer Review: This is a provocative book which warrants serious consideration. The author postulates that through the device of the sleeper curve, the various technological developments which pervade popular culture are not dumbing down America, but rather leading to development of a broader range of skills than credited by academic experts.
He sets out his view in sections devoted to video games, film, and very briefly, the internet, and explores the differing skills which are exercised during their consumption.
As someone who has exhibited a preference for aspects of popular culture as opposed to high culture for most of my life, the argument is very attractive at the outset. As one delves deeper into the subject serious questions arise as to whether there is a general case to answer.
Consider video games, where our author testifies to the skills required to play some of the more complex games such as Grand Theft Auto. There is a strong case to be made here but the issue is rather deflated when one considers that the vast majority of game players consume sports and other games which are considerably less complex and demanding.
Film also has a substantial longevity in the popular pantheon of leisure activities. It manages to portray a story and certain sophisticated complexities but still lacks by far the great leap forward that one achieves through reading a novel.
I would reject a notion that the use of the internet provides much of an intellectual challenge, given the degree to which internet consumers access porn sites and where much of the content is clearly aimed at the lower end of the spectrum
Having said all of this, I believe that there is something in the authors argument, but in a more narrow sense. For myself I consider that there are a minority of people within our society who exhibit skill and knowledge improvements as a result of immersion in the complexities and sophistications of certain games, or movies or whatever. The question of whether they are smarter is debatable. I would suggest that the elite to whom I refer demonstrate aptitudes of learning from external stimuli whichare far greater that those of the general populace. This tends to suggest to me however, that those aptitudes are inherited and/or learnt from an environment and upbringing where parents encourage skills of learning and exploring, encouragement and direction etc.
All in all, a worthwhile b...
Masters of Doom: How Two Guys Created an Empire and Transformed Pop Culture by David Kushner Amazon Price: $10.85
Customer Review: While I didn't purchase the book for me, my boyfriend (who never reads anything) loves this book. He can't put it down and told me it's one of the best books he's ever read. Coming from someone who never reads, you think that doesn't mean a lot, but the fact that he's finished it speaks volumes!
He loves this book. He says the realism puts you right there with them and that even the littlest details gives you a great story. He likes the depth of detail within the book.
So if you can't get your man to read- buy this book. Besides, Game Informer put this book among the best video game books ever. So my boyfriend isn't the only one who likes it!

Customer Review: Not bad, but I have read better. It does have a lot of good pictures of the effects they are teaching and all in all this book is not bad, there are just so many others that I feel are better. Check out The "DV Rebel Guide" by Stu something or other or "101 Digital Video hacks", both I feel are better than this.
Enjoy!
World of Warcraft / Atlas Gift Pack by BradyGames Amazon Price: Customer Review: The Atlas is great for finding your way around WOW and for finding just about any other item such as Resources, Skill Trainers, Professional Trainers and just about any other type of trainer or stock item you wish to find along with a specific person you may wish to find. The Detailed maps also gives you a relief picture of the land so you don't go falling off the end of the earth. The hard bond copy will help to keep the Atlas from wearing out since you will be using it quite often while adventuring in the lands of World of Warcraft.
Starcraft : Prima's Official Strategy Guide by Bart Farkas Amazon Price: Customer Review: It's slim - like a pamphlet - and infuriatingly replaces the manual in the Starcraft Battle Chest. The guide to the single player missions is reasonable, but they tend to be simplistic in any case (make a base or two, build a lot of defense, and crank out The Unstoppable Army so you can sweep the map in one massive wave.)
The unit descriptions and tactical advice are worth a buck or two at most; you'd be better off just fooling around with the units on your own to see what they do. Passages range from accurate but non-informative to flat out wrong - for example, the author claims one powerful spell that protects your units from all ranged attacks only works against air-to-ground fire. Captions often have nothing to do with their picture, which has nothing to do with the page.
There is a very brief section on multiplayer strategies, and it's the worst in the book. In describing the new layer of depth multiplayer adds, he offers this possibility (from memory):
"For example, if you say to your opponent "I hope your flank is protected", what should he think? Are you really about to attack his flank? This is the kind of thing that brings multiplayer to a different level from single player."
Nothing more needs to be said.
Diablo II Official Strategy Guide (Official Guide) by Bart Farkas Amazon Price: Customer Review: This came with the Diablo BattleChest. It's a nice reference to have around, but it's nothing you won't be able to find online. There's nothing in the guide that will steer you the wrong way, and it is nice to have it in printed form. I wouldn't pay money for it, but if you're getting the BattleChest, it's a nice little bonus.
Ultimate Game Programming With DirectX by Allen Sherrod Amazon Price: $38.96
Customer Review: Just to establish my own credentials - I'm a game developer with 5 published titles under my belt including Master of Orion 3, Kohan 2, Axis & Allies, and two Zoo Tycoon 2 games.
I was asked on very short notice to teach a Game Development class at a local college. So off I went to Borders to find a textbook. After some digging, this is what I picked out. The features that recommended it to me where that it included the source code, and over the course of the book it promised to build a fully functional game.
Here's what I found instead:
* I would guess from his terminology that the author has never worked at a game company. He just doesn't know the lingo - or he's worked somewhere so remote from my own experience that his lingo is completely different. Also, based on the quality of his code and the quality of the resulting game, he wouldn't survive a second at any game company out there. He wouldn't make it past the phone interview. If you are considering a career in game development, do NOT follow this person's example or you won't even get in the door.
* The code is the most horribly written I have ever seen. I would expect better out of anyone who has ever taken any sort of class on object oriented programming - or worked on any sort of project employing more than one person. The best way to describe it is poorly written C code written in C++. The spacing is non-standard. That variable names are horrible. For many of the programs, it's all in the main.cpp file. Global variables everywhere. Hardly any use of classes, and where they are used they are monolithic and poorly designed. Ugh.
* The book is frequently innaccurate. It needs an errata list badly - but if there is one, I haven't been able to find it. For example, in chapter 1 he tells you that you only need 1 line of code to enable z-buffering. After talking to colleagues and looking on the web, I was able to get this to work (I'm an AI guy, not a graphics guy) - but he was missing 4 of the 5 lines needed to make it happen.
* The book also tends to be incredibly light on details. It tells you the DirectX functions you need to call (mostly) and the specific values to plug in - but not what the functions do, or what the other possible values for their paramaters are, or how the parameters affect the output. The style of the writing is also incredibly informal - it sounds like something written by a ...
