The Whole Truth by David Baldacci Amazon Price: $17.81
Customer Review: The Whole Truth is my second Baldacci book, the first being The Collectors. Although the two are stylistically similar, if I did not know beforehand, I would have never suspected they were written by the same author -- The Whole Truth is much, MUCH better.
The Collectors was good "fluff." Well this is EXCELLENT fluff! Where The Collectors was corny, tongue-in-cheek, and unbelievable, this book was much more realistic (though still enjoyably cinematic). The protagonist, Shaw, is so hard-boiled, he reminds me of Micky Rourke's character in the Sin City movie, but he's an entirely likable figure, and you can't help but root for him.
This book is also quite timely. Although the device used to stir up anti-Russian sentiment in the book was not at all believable, in real life, the neocons have put into action a much better plan. My only beef with the novel's version of of events is that the U.S. government was blissfully ignorant, and it was all defense-contractor doing. Like The Collectors, and, I presume, Baldacci's other books, The Whole Truth is very skeptical of Big Government and the military-industrial complex. Baldacci is not a hardcore libertarian, but he's a thriller author that hardcore libertarians can more than stomach -- they can enjoy.
This is not great literature, of course, but it was a thoroughly entertaining read. I literally could not put the book down, and for that, it more than merits five stars. Hooray for Baldacci! I hope he keeps this up and lets the corny Camel Club recede into oblivion.
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger Amazon Price: $6.99
Customer Review: This book is one of those books that every kid at age 15 should read. It may seem to have subjects that kids shouldn't be exposed to but let's not kid ourselves. Children these days just seem smarter and capable of more and more each day. If they are exposed to such adult topics as adult social interaction, violence, alcohol and broken homes in the world of superbly crafted literature it would do nothing but broaden their understanding of reality and the world around them a hundred times over. They are going to seek out or happen across these topics as the world is getting smaller and smaller so why not allow it under favorable conditions? This book represents a very meaninful moment in my childhood: a day that I grew up a little.
All the Pretty Horses by Cormac Mccarthy Amazon Price: $10.17
Customer Review: I found this book an effort to read. Confusing at the start, yet did grab me midway but I was ready to discard with about 1/3 left, but thought better of it and completed. Yes, his writing is very descriptive and captures the essence of every sense the reader needs to be placed within the story. However, it just seemed to skip and jumble along, the ending wasn't anything like the many my mind conjured up, it wasn't really anything special at all...Grady continued on rambling as did the book. I perhaps need to read another of his works to get a better grasp of the talent of this writer, as so many have applauded his style.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (Book 6) by J. K. Rowling Amazon Price: $19.79
Customer Review: WOW, she really did a great job of getting everyone fired up for book 7. The ending was torture. I don't know if that makes me happy or really angry. I find myself continually amazed at how she created all this in her head and if she knew how things would turn out from the very start.
A Writer's Reference: 2003 MLA Update by Diana Hacker Amazon Price: Customer Review: I was directed to use "A Writer's Reference" beginning with the second addition. When I could choose texts for my classes, I voluntarily chose this very text, which I use for pre-freshman composition, freshman critical thinking/composition, literature/advanced composition, and critical thinking/advanced composition. The sixth edition is better than ever. Furthermore, it is the one book I tell my students to never sell back as I firmly believe it will take care of students' writing needs through their bachelors and beyond.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey Amazon Price: Customer Review: I really enjoyed reading "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen R Covey. Covey starts with the premise everyone is born with these traits and one has to practice and cultivate them.
My favorite chapter is "WIN/WIN". Covey's premise is there are 6 paradigms of humans interaction and that WIN/WIN is not a technique it is a philosophy of human interaction. Relationships can be mutually beneficial, everybody wins! "It is not my way or your way but a better way, a higher way." This chapter reminds me of the "Golden Rule" (Do unto others what you would like them to do to you) which I was taught as a child.
Another book I really enjoyed was Being Here: Modern Day Tales of Enlightenment by award winning authors Ariel & Shya Kane, This is a wonderful book of short stories that are all about accessing the moment and living a satisfying and fulfilling life.
Born Standing Up: A Comic's Life by Steve Martin Amazon Price: $16.50
Customer Review: I remember watching Steve Martin's seemingly meteoric rise from Tonight Show guest, to Saturday Night Live stalwart, to concert hall blockbuster. He made me laugh. He helped take the edge off the 70's. I remember leaving one of his Nassau Coliseum shows thinking that all in the world was good and it's ok to be goofy - for a little while anyway. It was from that melancholy recollection I read through this book.
While Martin's stand up humor was edgy, innovative, and visual, Born Standing Up is laced with a dry humor that sometimes brings chuckles one or two lines afterward. We can see that as is true for most seemingly overnight success stories there are years of hard work and sacrifice behind the sensation. Though there is only a small window into Steve's creative genius, you can see how his young life contributed to the product he presented on stage. Martin's stand up act was filled with silliness, idiocy, and just plain tomfoolery. In Born Standing Up we see the crafting of that act took an intellectual approach and technical dissection of how comedy works. Laced with stories of his family life, upstart employment, inspirations, encounters and collaborations with familiar performers from the era, and the eventual eruption of his show, Born Standing Up leads down a road of opportunities realized and acted upon.
Tracking the career of Steve Martin can be confusing. The performances of the stand up era are dramatically different from the ones we see in movies today. So different that when I played some of "Let's Get Small" for my kids (who are very familiar with the Cheaper by the Dozen dad) they had a hard time believing it is the same person. Born Standing Up reveals an underlying personality that is constant throughout Martin's career.
I believe this is a 5 star book for anyone who fondly remembers Martin's stand-up. Thanks Steve for making the world a little less serious!
He's Just Not That Into You: The No-Excuses Truth to Understanding Guys by Greg Behrendt, Liz Tuccillo Amazon Price: Customer Review: So, this book isn't really bad , but it is common sense. We girls keep making excuses for the man when deep down we known what's going on. We just don't want to say it or belive it. The book basically says the same thing over and over in every chapter just different situations. Basically if the guy doesn't treat you like a princess then " he is just not into you!" That doesn't take a whoe book to say but and here is where credit is due; if you are hard headed and in one of these relationships maybe reading the whole book is what you need.
The Darkest Evening of the Year by Dean Koontz Amazon Price: $17.82
Customer Review: Although a good quick read, I just couldn't get into this one? Dean has entertained me more in other books, but if you can relate to dogs and the love people have for them you can probably get into this page turner on an entirely different level.
I love the characters, especially "Piggy's" Mom. The descriptions and character development tugged at my emotions which really let me be pulled into the ending of this book. Your heart will drag you page by page as you put this twisted puzzle together.
Lucky: A Memoir by Alice Sebold Amazon Price: $10.39
Customer Review: From the opening pages, Sebold tells the reader a truly horrifying story of her rape in accurate and quite graphic detail. And whilst horrified at what she has endured, you want to read more - to see how someone survives an attack like that, and what life is like for a rape victim in the hours, days and week afterwards. I couldn't put this book down - a combination of great writing and admiration for the author, made this a compelling read.
