Customer Review: First, I really enjoyed this book. I believe Tuchman did a masterful job of giving life to the people and events that led to WWI. This book is well worth reading, but only for what it is: half-history, half-literature.
This is not the place to start if you want to understand what led to WWI. The author does have a distinct anti-German bias that glosses over most of the complexities that influenced Germany's actions. Given when the book was written, this bias is understandable, but it does affect its historical value. Moreover, Serbia and the Hapsburgs are essentially footnotes in this book when in reality, they are essential for understanding the causes of the war. When you ignore Serbia and Austro-Hungary, well, all you're left with is Germany acting like a belligerent punk under the hand of the man-child Wilhelm II.
Also, Tuchman definitely prefers some individuals over others. For example, she gives Sir French pretty short-shrift in comparison to Lord Kitchener when in reality, there was more than enough incompetence to go around (not that I would have done any better than they).
I do whole-heartedly recommend this book, but only as a halfway step from history to fiction, perhaps sandwiched between A World Undone and All Quiet on the Western Front.

Customer Review: In Gun, With Occasional Music, Jonathan Lethem gives us science fiction's worthy successor to Raymond Chandler. Though this is the easy take-home message from nearly every quoted newspaper columnist, book jacket blurb, and miscellaneous reviewer -- they also all happen to be right. Even a cursory familiarity with Chandler's pulp noir will ring through with startling clarity to readers of this novel. The cadence of the narrative, the hard-boiled dialogue, the archetypal characters... Lethem's Conrad Metcalf is a well-executed Philip Marlowe cover song with just a little bit of record scratching thrown into the background for texture.
On the other hand, those same columnist quotes, blurbs, and reviewers all seem to liken Lethem to Philip K. Dick. Personally: not seeing it. It's a bit of a stretch, some optimistic name-dropping to match up Lethem's mystery/noir heritage with some similarly classic science fiction antecedent. The ubiquitous drug use? Sure, okay -- that's a bit Dickian. A Möbius fold of reality unraveling around the narrator in some palpable and thoroughly eldritch fashion? Not so much. More than PKD, the scenes in this novel played out in my imagination as fearfully symmetrical to Cronenberg's take on Burroughs` Naked Lunch -- substitute Jim Henson-esque "evolved" animals for Mugwumps but otherwise that's it, right down to Peter Weller as Conrad Metcalf.
Or maybe this certain GoodReads.com reviewer has got it down: "It's Blade Runner meets Who Framed Roger Rabbit?"
Where was I? Oh right...
A part of me desires to do a chapter-by-chapter deconstruction of the text, to get all scholarly about it and run the blockade of Chandler's lineage here. I want to look for the hidden significance of the doctors as urologists, to get semiotic on names like "Catherine Teleprompter" and "Danny Phoneblum". But instead I'll just give a positive nod. It's a fun, noirish scifi romp with all the right moves and delivers slightly better than expectations.

Lott examines a whole host of important issues, including gun-control regulations-assault weapons bans, "one-gun-a-month", right-to-carry laws and more. The left-wing absurdities become apparent: If you create gun free school zones, then law abiding citizens won't bring weapons. But will criminal obey that kind of law? Probably not. Lott uses analysis, graphs and table to support his assertions. A very useful book to understand that your 2nd Amendment Civil Rights have a basis in stopping crime in society.

Customer Review: This is a must-have book if you collect, shoot, or just enjoy reading about Mosin-Nagant rifles. This official soviet handbook includes all the usual descriptive and how to shoot information you would expect. Additionally, you will see sections that you would not expect including selecting targets, shooting at armored targets, shooting at aviation targets (including parachutists!)and firing in conditions of a chemical warfare attack.

Cipolla does a creditable job of examining the reasons, mostly social, that allowed this to happen. He points out that if you looked at Europe in 1200, you may not have put your money on Europe winning as big as it did.

Customer Review: This is a very well written and informative book. More people on both sides of the second amendment issue should take the time to read this book. It truly points the failings of the people of this country not to speak out when the government just continues to trample on their constitutional rights. It shows how the government will backdoor the bill of rights and the constitution so that we the people can be good little sheep and do as we are told. Its more than just the 2nd amendment thats being worked and this book shows a lot about what is truly happening to our rights.

Customer Review: Gosh, this was a pleasant book to read. The only negative I recall was the lack of detailed information about all of the photographs scattered throughout the book. I admit I was hoping to read a little more about some of the business failures and reasons why some firearms did not go into production. However, we don't need to focus in on the negative when it comes to Mr. Ruger's wonderful life! Other than my desire to want a little more description about the photographs and business dealings, this was an absolutely wonderful book on Mr. Ruger.
