People saw their clairvoyance in the wiped-out elms and harsh sunlight. Some thought the torture tearing the Lisbon girls pointed to a simple refusal to accept the world as it was handed down to them: So full of flaws. But the only thing we are certain of after all these years is the insufficiency of explanation. "Obviously doctor, you've never been a thirteen year-old girl." The Lisbon girls were 13, Cecillia, 14, Lux, 15, Bonnie, 16, Mary, and 17, Therese. No one could understand how Mrs. Lisbon and Mr. Lisbon, our math teacher, had produced such beautiful creatures. From that time on, the Lisbon house began to change. Almost every day, and even when she wasn't keeping an eye on Cecilia, Lux would suntan on her towel wearing a swimsuit that caused the knife-sharpener to give her a 15-minute demonstration for free. The only reliable boy who got to know Lux was Trip Fontaine For only 18 months before the suicides had emerged from baby fat To the delight of girls and mothers alike. We would have lost them completely if the girls hadn't contacted us. Lux was the last to go. Fleeing from the house, we forgot to stop at the garage. After the suicide free-for-all, Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon gave up any attempt to lead a normal life. They had Mr. Hedly pack up the house, selling what furniture he could at a garage sale. Everyone went just to look. Our parents did not buy used furniture, and they certainly didn't buy furniture tainted by death. We of course took the family photos that were put out with the trash. Mr. Lisbon put the house on the market, and it was sold to a young couple from Boston. It didn't matter in the end how old they had been, but that they were girls. But only that we had loved them, and that they hadn't heard us calling; still do not hear us. In the back of our garage is a sound-proof room that was created as an office by the previous owner. We gave it to the kids as a music room for their gear. However, it was also used as a place to keep un-used furniture, a junk drawer, etc. and was frustrating for the kids. So, for about $250 and a little inspiration, we fixed the problem. WAR of the GIANTS CYCLOPS vs. DRAGON in BATTLE ROYAL! KrOB on the JOB-- KrOB's krazy kut-up kinema kompels kontentment! Last week, just as advertised, inordinately large alien hunting spiders, along with other critters too outré to classify, made (not too-) mercifully short work of ordinary, tax-paying American consumers in a fog-shrouded convenience store parking lot. It was really something to see these Joe Lunchpail types fall to the chelicerae of aggressive, hungry and relentless 600-pound scuttling mega-spiders. Not to mention 4-story mantises and other unexpected predators, escapees from an exo-plenum. But now we're going to see something he's long wished to present. We will see the dragon Magog, thrall of Sokurah the Necromancer on the cryptic Island of Colossa, break free from his chains and savagely battle a huge, grotesque Cyclops. This time the monsters don't attack humans. They're too busy attacking each other! Space is limited here-- let's just say that this spectacular, green fire-breathing dragon, who guards his evil lord's cavern against the incursion of satyr-like one-eyed giants, simply loses it when one of the latter actually has the temerity to stride right into the cave. The fight that follows beggars description. The Cyclopes, or single-eyes, were originally the offspring of Elder Gods Gaia and Uranus and served (under Hephaestus) as the inventive blacksmiths of the Olympian gods. They were skilled metal workers and created Zeus's thunderbolts, Poseidon's trident, and Hades's Helmet of Darkness that was later used by Perseus while on his quest to decapitate the Gorgon, Medusa. When the universe came into being, there were many monsters and vague forms that were gradually replaced with beings with forms more human. The second generation of Cyclops was comparatively degenerate, however, anthropophagous island-dwellers who were the offspring of Poseidon and the sea nymph Thoosa, ignorant shepherds who had lost the secrets of metallurgy. In the third generation, they had even lost the power of speech, though they preserved and used furniture and accouterments from their superior progenitors. These latter giants had reverted to a satyr-like configuration, the cloven hoofs and shaggy limbs supporting a quasi-reptilian, humanoid torso. Their huge heads bore one or two horns. As for the Dragon Magog, a somewhat sympathetic figure, whose crystal egg was found and retrieved by the wizard Sokurah from ancient China, two hundred years previous to when we see him, and who was kept ever afterward as the Magician's slave, his underground captivity eerily prefigures the imprisonment of Satan in the Book of Revelation. He's called a dragon too. Cool, eh? No, it just wouldn't be the Ask Dr. Hal! show without the inclusion of this proven popular attraction, would it? Educational and scientific, the great KrOB's notorious "edits"on the Giant Screen, in dynamic, full-fidelity KrOB Sound? will again comprise a memorable multi-media experience. Just keep him away from that Kn/rob Creek bottle he'll do just fine.

Using what I'd learned in my drafting for cabinetmakers class and after considering what my husband and I really needed by way of a built-in, I designed a nice modular unit. Woodsmith's Bookcases, Shelves and Cabinets helped me keep on course with the project, acting like an instructor. A number of projects illustrated in the book helped me design some of the parts that I wanted to include in my own design. I wanted simple finger hole drawers (p. 16-19) for the inside of the upper part of the closet which would be hidden behind doors, and larger more finished looking drawers for the lower closet. For the latter I redesigned some of the modular cabinets (pp. 94-105), using the case work the authors show and putting in drawers instead of shelves. The doors illustrated for these cabinets also provided me with a template with which to design the doors for the upper cabinets in my own design.

The book includes a number of truly lovely projects, some for bookshelves, an armoire, and a corner cabinet that I'd like to try, but I think those will have to wait awhile. While some of the plans for jigs for making repeated parts easier to process were very interesting, I think I'll wait to consult with my instructor in the fall before trying them. The exploded views of all the patterns and the suggestions for alterations to the designs make the book fully understandable even to a novice like myself. I look forward to using some of the ideas and techniques in future designs for my classes next year. Really a terrific book.
