This is our maiden appeal to help turn the lights on for some children in a deprived school. We need to support them, in Cash or Kind. But mainly in Kind. They need books, used computers. a little money to prevent them from going on the streets after school. This is what the head of english department says...

http://www.frugalbrothers.com Why spend $1000 or more on a new computer when a $200 used computer will do the work required? You certainly don't need a 400 HP car to go to the supermarket, so why pay for unnecessary Gigahertz when you won't use them anyway? Distributed by Tubemogul.

This is my video response to James Houston's remix of Radiohead's Nude. I decided to try my own version with Funkytown by Lipps Inc. I only used computers from the early 1980's that were destined for the Junk Yard and this is how I got the idea for JunkyTown. I also used a modem but DTMF tones are lousy for musical notes (no harmonics) but I was very lucky to find two notes that did sound good. On your phone punch in 3 3 2 3 and you got the beginning part of the solo and the rest is history. Please note no synthesizer or audio effects were used and all the audio was recorded from a microphone or direct line. Some of the audio was amplified when it was mixed down because the levels were too low ie. the printer and modem. The Commodore 64 was used for the main Bass and Guitar. The Ti-99/4A was used for the second part of the solo because of the limitation of DTMF tones. It was tempting to just sample the modem but I did not in order to keep it 100% original. It was difficult to video tape the printer because it kept shaking the table so I looped the printer video in the begining of the video. The printer sometimes caused the harddrive head to shake out of sync so I inserted a screw into the mechinism and this some what helped. 90% of the work was put into the audio and very little effort was put into the video and I think this did affect the overall results. http://www.myspace.com/jitendraziga What are you going to do with this technical world? Can you make something out of it. Is it always going to be useful? Can we build bricks from used computers and make houses out of them? Maybe we can grind them and introvenously feed them to the information cancer patients. So far, I haven't got a clue.

Reception Tron proved to be moderately successful during its theatrical run, grossing approximately double its budget in the USA ($33,000,000). However, critical reviews were mixed. On a positive note, Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film four out of four stars and described the film as "a dazzling movie from Walt Disney in which computers have been used to make themselves romantic and glamorous. Here's a technological sound-and-light show that is sensational and brainy, stylish, and fun." However, near the end of his review he noted (in a positive tone) that "This is an almost wholly technological movie. Although it's populated by actors who are engaging (Bridges, Cindy Morgan) or sinister (Warner), it is not really a movie about human nature. Like [the original Star Wars trilogy], but much more so, this movie is a machine to dazzle and delight us." On the other hand, Variety disliked the film and said in its review, "Tron is loaded with visual delights but falls way short of the mark in story and viewer involvement. Screenwriter-director Steven Lisberger has adequately marshalled a huge force of technicians to deliver the dazzle, but even kids (and specifically computer game freaks) will have a difficult time getting hooked on the situations." "In the year it was released", says director Lisberger, "the Motion Picture Academy refused to nominate Tron for special effects because they said we 'cheated' when we used computers which, in the light of what happened, is just mind-boggling." Following the film's moderate success in theatres, it grew to become a cult favorite due mainly to its innovative use of computer graphics and its computer and video-game plot line. In 1987, the French radio station TopFM voted Tron the best film with computer graphics in its annual film competition. It retained that title for ten years until Titanic was released in 1997.

SPOILER-RIDDEN VIDEO! You shouldn't watch if, A: You haven't played this AWESOME game yet and want to, or, B: You have played the game but have explosive amnesia... Well, my promise to PsychonautMonique is complete. (Many thanks for the inspiration!) But I'm not really satisfied with the output. It took almost a week and a half to make. 3-4 days to capture video and about 8 days of splicing and tweaking. Why so long editing? Many reasons. I only have the bare essentials (Windows Movie Maker) on my computer and I have a very slow computer. Every time I wanted to preview, I had to convert and preview the movie in a separate program because WMM would be so laggy and unresponsive like "molasses going uphill in January, in crutches." Another problem I hit was (with WMM again) that I couldn't save the whole movie in one file. I had to cut it in 3 pieces and merge them with another program! So if you hear 2 skips in the music, I'm deeply sorry. (My largest gripe of my project.) Seriously, if I had a better computer and movie editing program, I bet I would have gotten this done a whole lot earlier and better. I've done video editing at school. I would love one of their used computers! It was a good editing exercise anyways. Enjoy nevertheless! AND BUY THE GAME! ...or at least the soundtrack...

It's called swatting. People call in phony hostage situations to get the SWAT team to respond to someone's home. One North Texas victim said he and his wife received prank calls for months. Now, the suspects have pleaded guilty to federal charges in Dallas. Police say they used computers to make the phony calls seem real. In all, they made 60 calls and had 100 victims nationwide. One call took place on June, 2006. Jim Proulx received an unwelcome wake-up call at one a.m. from the Cleburne Police SWAT Team. "There were two SWAT guys... aiming their M-14s," Proulx said. "They laid me on the ground, handcuffed me and then put me in the squad car." The SWAT officers were told Proulx called police, saying he shot and killed family members, was armed with an AK-47 and would kill his hostages if he didn't get $50,000 and transportation to Mexico. "We thought it was the worst," said Corporal Dale Abbott of the Cleburne Police Department's SWAT Team. "We already had reports that shots had been fired." But after the SWAT team searched Proulx's house, he said, "They see I didn't shoot my wife... I don't have a hostage... And I'm no threat to them." It was a hoax. Federal prosecutors said Stuart Rosoff and at least five others in a party chat line have pleaded guilty to the conspiracy. The suspects called police and duped them by disguising their own number with Proulx's, making it seem he was calling from his house. Cpl. Abbott said the SWAT team was at his house for hours. "This is not funny at all. It puts his life in danger. It puts our life in danger. We don't know what to expect," he said. Prosecutors say another member of the group, Guadalupe Martinez, did the same thing to Proulx's daughter in Fort Worth. Prosecutors say she participated in the chat-room but wasn't charged. Rosoff's attorney, Victor Vital, said the swatting was all a game to his clients and other. He said it was all about, "one-upmanship, who's the best, who's in control of the party line, who can SWAT who or get who the best." Proulx was lucky no one was hurt, especially in his condition. He said six months earlier, "I had just had open heart surgery." Proulx is fine now and said he is no longer angry at the suspects. Rosoff's attorney said his client is sorry, and is cooperating with prosecutors. In exchange, he'll have similar charges in Michigan dropped. Another suspect, Chad Ward, will plead guilty to the conspiracy in federal court in Dallas on Thursday.

Two cuts of this video were made - one for Loyola and one for New Trier -- While this is the Loyola cut, it's still packed with some fun NT material. If / when we find the NT cut we'll post it, too. =========================== *PRODUCTION NOTES: this video was assembled on analog VCR's before we used computers - it's a little rough. *PRODUCTION NOTES: The New Trier cut of this video has been found (3/10/08). Along with our website, The Dream Tanker, has had a makeover. Comedian-turned painter Jimmy Onishi and 40 elementary school students have designed monster-sized psychedelic murals for the ship's spherical tanks. The total area covered by the murals is large enough to cover 100 buses. Talk about getting noticed! Osaka Gas decided to decorate the tanker with graphics in celebration of the company's 100th anniversary. The company asked Kansai-area elementary school students to draw pictures, which Jimmy Onishi then incorporated into his giant images of a fish, crab, shrimp and turtle. Jimmy and the kids didn't have to climb on this 950 foot boat to paint it- Sumitomo 3M Limited used computers to process the images and printed them onto a special adhesive film, which was attached to the tanks. The total surface area of the images amounts to about one acre! Sumitomo 3M submitted an application to the Guinness Book of World Records to officially establish the work as the world's largest graphic design on a mode of transportation.
