Funky Town by Lipps Inc. Remixed with Old Computer Equipment (Funkytown)
by rss@youtube.com (bd594)
13 Jul 2008 at 5:34am

This is my video response to James Houston's remix of Radiohead's Nude. I decided to try my own version with Funkytown by Lipps Inc. I only used computers from the early 1980's that were destined for the Junk Yard and this is how I got the idea for JunkyTown. I also used a modem but DTMF tones are lousy for musical notes (no harmonics) but I was very lucky to find two notes that did sound good. On your phone punch in 3 3 2 3 and you got the beginning part of the solo and the rest is history. Please note no synthesizer or audio effects were used and all the audio was recorded from a microphone or direct line. Some of the audio was amplified when it was mixed down because the levels were too low ie. the printer and modem. The Commodore 64 was used for the main Bass and Guitar. The Ti-99/4A was used for the second part of the solo because of the limitation of DTMF tones. It was tempting to just sample the modem but I did not in order to keep it 100% original. It was difficult to video tape the printer because it kept shaking the table so I looped the printer video in the begining of the video. The printer sometimes caused the harddrive head to shake out of sync so I inserted a screw into the mechinism and this some what helped. 90% of the work was put into the audio and very little effort was put into the video and I think this did affect the overall results. James Cochrane

The Seoul Metropolitan Government implements "IT Hope Project" to enhance the information skills of low-income citizens by providing used computers and financial support for the Internet expenses. Let's take a look at the various activities changing the digital city. To provide more systematic support and management services, the city government is now implementing "IT Hope Project" in cooperation with IT corporations and Community Chest of Korea. http://www.myspace.com/jitendraziga What are you going to do with this technical world? Can you make something out of it. Is it always going to be useful? Can we build bricks from used computers and make houses out of them? Maybe we can grind them and introvenously feed them to the information cancer patients. So far, I haven't got a clue.

Kingdom Hearts II -075- I/O Tower
by rss@youtube.com (ffgtahpfan)
4 Mar 2008 at 2:30pm

Reception Tron proved to be moderately successful during its theatrical run, grossing approximately double its budget in the USA ($33,000,000). However, critical reviews were mixed. On a positive note, Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film four out of four stars and described the film as "a dazzling movie from Walt Disney in which computers have been used to make themselves romantic and glamorous. Here's a technological sound-and-light show that is sensational and brainy, stylish, and fun." However, near the end of his review he noted (in a positive tone) that "This is an almost wholly technological movie. Although it's populated by actors who are engaging (Bridges, Cindy Morgan) or sinister (Warner), it is not really a movie about human nature. Like [the original Star Wars trilogy], but much more so, this movie is a machine to dazzle and delight us." On the other hand, Variety disliked the film and said in its review, "Tron is loaded with visual delights but falls way short of the mark in story and viewer involvement. Screenwriter-director Steven Lisberger has adequately marshalled a huge force of technicians to deliver the dazzle, but even kids (and specifically computer game freaks) will have a difficult time getting hooked on the situations." "In the year it was released", says director Lisberger, "the Motion Picture Academy refused to nominate Tron for special effects because they said we 'cheated' when we used computers which, in the light of what happened, is just mind-boggling." Following the film's moderate success in theatres, it grew to become a cult favorite due mainly to its innovative use of computer graphics and its computer and video-game plot line. In 1987, the French radio station TopFM voted Tron the best film with computer graphics in its annual film competition. It retained that title for ten years until Titanic was released in 1997.

A Psychonaut's Dream
by rss@youtube.com (PurifierUnitBreakman)
2 Feb 2008 at 11:26am

SPOILER-RIDDEN VIDEO! You shouldn't watch if, A: You haven't played this AWESOME game yet and want to, or, B: You have played the game but have explosive amnesia... Well, my promise to PsychonautMonique is complete. (Many thanks for the inspiration!) But I'm not really satisfied with the output. It took almost a week and a half to make. 3-4 days to capture video and about 8 days of splicing and tweaking. Why so long editing? Many reasons. I only have the bare essentials (Windows Movie Maker) on my computer and I have a very slow computer. Every time I wanted to preview, I had to convert and preview the movie in a separate program because WMM would be so laggy and unresponsive like "molasses going uphill in January, in crutches." Another problem I hit was (with WMM again) that I couldn't save the whole movie in one file. I had to cut it in 3 pieces and merge them with another program! So if you hear 2 skips in the music, I'm deeply sorry. (My largest gripe of my project.) Seriously, if I had a better computer and movie editing program, I bet I would have gotten this done a whole lot earlier and better. I've done video editing at school. I would love one of their used computers! It was a good editing exercise anyways. Enjoy nevertheless! AND BUY THE GAME! ...or at least the soundtrack...

Pranksters Lure SWAT Teams Through Phony Calls
by rss@youtube.com (passivemode)
20 Jan 2008 at 4:26pm

It's called swatting. People call in phony hostage situations to get the SWAT team to respond to someone's home. One North Texas victim said he and his wife received prank calls for months. Now, the suspects have pleaded guilty to federal charges in Dallas. Police say they used computers to make the phony calls seem real. In all, they made 60 calls and had 100 victims nationwide. One call took place on June, 2006. Jim Proulx received an unwelcome wake-up call at one a.m. from the Cleburne Police SWAT Team. "There were two SWAT guys... aiming their M-14s," Proulx said. "They laid me on the ground, handcuffed me and then put me in the squad car." The SWAT officers were told Proulx called police, saying he shot and killed family members, was armed with an AK-47 and would kill his hostages if he didn't get $50,000 and transportation to Mexico. "We thought it was the worst," said Corporal Dale Abbott of the Cleburne Police Department's SWAT Team. "We already had reports that shots had been fired." But after the SWAT team searched Proulx's house, he said, "They see I didn't shoot my wife... I don't have a hostage... And I'm no threat to them." It was a hoax. Federal prosecutors said Stuart Rosoff and at least five others in a party chat line have pleaded guilty to the conspiracy. The suspects called police and duped them by disguising their own number with Proulx's, making it seem he was calling from his house. Cpl. Abbott said the SWAT team was at his house for hours. "This is not funny at all. It puts his life in danger. It puts our life in danger. We don't know what to expect," he said. Prosecutors say another member of the group, Guadalupe Martinez, did the same thing to Proulx's daughter in Fort Worth. Prosecutors say she participated in the chat-room but wasn't charged. Rosoff's attorney, Victor Vital, said the swatting was all a game to his clients and other. He said it was all about, "one-upmanship, who's the best, who's in control of the party line, who can SWAT who or get who the best." Proulx was lucky no one was hurt, especially in his condition. He said six months earlier, "I had just had open heart surgery." Proulx is fine now and said he is no longer angry at the suspects. Rosoff's attorney said his client is sorry, and is cooperating with prosecutors. In exchange, he'll have similar charges in Michigan dropped. Another suspect, Chad Ward, will plead guilty to the conspiracy in federal court in Dallas on Thursday.

Along with our website, The Dream Tanker, has had a makeover. Comedian-turned painter Jimmy Onishi and 40 elementary school students have designed monster-sized psychedelic murals for the ship's spherical tanks. The total area covered by the murals is large enough to cover 100 buses. Talk about getting noticed! Osaka Gas decided to decorate the tanker with graphics in celebration of the company's 100th anniversary. The company asked Kansai-area elementary school students to draw pictures, which Jimmy Onishi then incorporated into his giant images of a fish, crab, shrimp and turtle. Jimmy and the kids didn't have to climb on this 950 foot boat to paint it- Sumitomo 3M Limited used computers to process the images and printed them onto a special adhesive film, which was attached to the tanks. The total surface area of the images amounts to about one acre! Sumitomo 3M submitted an application to the Guinness Book of World Records to officially establish the work as the world's largest graphic design on a mode of transportation. used computers Books
Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory Concepts and Techniques, Windows XP Edition
by Gary B. Shelly, Thomas J. Cashman, Misty E. Vermaat
Amazon Price: $95.95
Customer Review: I purchased this book for my CIS 120 class (that is intro to micro-computers). This book is an excellent teaching guide to learn everything there is to know about Microsoft Office software. It is very detailed and it gives you examples and you will learn hands on. This is an excellent book for anyone that need to learn or even need a refresher course. This book have step-by-step instructions. I highly recommend this book.

Non-Designer's Design Book, The (3rd Edition)
by Robin Williams
Amazon Price: $19.79
Customer Review: Upon receiving the book I was surprised how thin it was. But overall I am very happy about the purchase. A thicker book might have been more complex. This has simple language, it's easy to read and easy to apply. After reading most of the book I had to create a flyer, and following the tips made the work easier and the result much better: even graphics professionals say the result is pretty good!

Dreamweaver CS3: The Missing Manual
by David McFarland
Amazon Price: $29.69
Customer Review: David McFarland's guide answers most, but not my any means all, of the questions, a beginner or intermediate user might ask about Adobe Dreamweaver, the absolute best commercial program for web design. It's a good start and McFarland writes clearly and accurately but doesn't always follow through to the depth that some users nned. That said, it's still probably the best book yet published on Dreamweaver, useful and easy-to use.

New Perspectives on Microsoft Office Excel 2007, Comprehensive (New Perspecti...
by June Jamrich Parsons, Dan Oja, Roy Ageloff, Patrick Carey
Amazon Price: $88.15
Customer Review: Three cheers for this book and the other Thomson/Course Technology "Comprehensive" books addressing various applications in Microsoft Office 2007 (and, earlier, in Office 2003, etc.). The books are designed for successful use (either on a self-study basis, or in formal courses) on the part of those who, starting with no prior knowledge, want to bring themselves up to a skill level corresponding to what Microsoft terms "Microsoft Certified Application Specialist." Here are some of the distinguishing features of this Excel 2007 book:

(1) The book makes effective use of color, including frequent and well annotated screen shots.

(2) The book presents material in a highly readable, step by step way. (This might be a disadvantage for fast-track users of the book who do not need or want that much "hand holding," but it does mean that just about any motivated person who works conscientiously with the book can achieve success.)

(3) Each of the 12 chapters is set in the context of a "case" providing meaningful settings within which the application potential of Excel is brought into focus, usually in a "business-related" way. (This contrasts with some books that describe "how to do this" and "how to do that," but might lack motivation for WHY it might be of interest to be able to do this or do that.) Peripheral benefit: the book provides an informal introduction to some aspects of business, in the sense of extracting information from data to provide insights and perhaps support fundamental decision making.

(4) Each chapter concludes with a set of five exercises or "cases," starting with an exercise in which the reader is asked to extend the material developed in the body of the chapter. Starting-point workbooks for these exercises (and for the case presented in the body of the chapter itself) can be downloaded from the publisher's website. Workbook "solutions" for the cases can be downloaded by instructors using the book in a course setting. (Although some of the exercises include "explore" steps, the exercises do largely tend to take a "follow the bouncing ball" approach, which helps the user ease into the material but probably falls short for fast-track users who might want to be challenged to be more creative in applying the material, i.e., "Here's a situation, and here's the information that is to be developed in this situation. Starting from scratch and using your own wits entirely, develop the information. No ...

Envisioning Information
by Edward R. Tufte
Amazon Price: $34.56
Customer Review: Tufte follows up his debut classic with an even more beautiful piece of graphic art disguised as a guide to ways to display three (and more) dimensions on a flat surface.

While even more beautifully crafted than The Visual Display of Quantitative Information, 2nd edition, it has less in the way of practical guidance. Tufte's principle here can be reduced to this far-reaching but not so simply-implemented statement: increase the resolution of "flatland" (paper or computer screen) to show more data to increase clarity.

As usual, the principle is lavishly illustrated with beautifully-reproduced examples of good and bad ways of envisioning information. In fact, I have found Tufte's principle and illustrations are useful ways of thinking about how to improve my own graphics, but I find my ability to implement them frustrated by the limitations of the design tools I use most: Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Word, wikis. That is a negative reflection on the tools, not on Tufte.

In any case, enjoy Tufte's books now for the portable affordable art that they are, and hope for the tools to catch up soon.

Learning Python, 3rd Edition
by Mark Lutz
Amazon Price: $23.99
Customer Review: Like my title suggests, if you have programming experience and you do not mind or have little trouble reading the Python documentation in a online fashion then its probably not absolutely necessary that you have to buy the book.

However, the author is very good in instilling the nature of Python programming and he's good at getting you to think about the concepts but this book is definitely not a cookbook. Last thing is that it doesn't concentrate on the GUI nor library usage etc as it's mission is simply to teach you about the core of Python

Essential ActionScript 3.0 (Essential) (Essential)
by Colin Moock
Amazon Price: $34.64
Customer Review: This book is brilliant. It's encyclopedic. It is a must-have to better understand AS 3 and to hopefully lower your frustration when coding. I am a designer fairly new to AS 3 and found this book gave clear, detailed explanations on every aspect of AS 3. Like an encyclopedia, each chapter breaks down specific core concepts, from Arrays and XML, into their basics. Information is laid out well and can be found quickly simply by looking at the book's table of contents. As a reference book, it fills in the "why" that other books on Flash or on-line tutorials don't have time or space to cover in easy to understand detail. Colin Moock avoids confusing jargon and de-mystifies ActionScipt.

MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-620): Configuring Windows Vista(TM) Cli...
by I. McLean, Orin Thomas
Amazon Price: $35.99
Customer Review: This is a review for the 70-620 book. I took the classes 5115 and 5116 from Microsoft. These classes alone would not have been enough to pass the 70-620 test. I don't know if the book alone would have been enough to pass either. I found the book well written enough. There were a few typos and I've seen lots of other reviews saying how the information in the book was inaccurate, however I did not find this to be the case. I spent every free moment I had studying the book and was through it in about 1 week. Give your self plenty of time to go through the book and do all the practice stuff. The practice tests were "ok" at best. Here is where I found inaccurate information. The tests clearly need some updating because they were marking answers wrong that I know were correct. All in all it was a good study guide. I honestly don't think that I could have passed the 70-620 test with out it, but I'm not sure if this was my *only* source if I would have passed the test. Good luck!
