Customer Review: Harford is a mecro-economist, a bridge between macro and micro economics. Harford explains macro-economic phenomena such as retail pricing, stock market behavior, taxation, health-care, environment, and licensing air-waves; by one-by-one getting inside the heads of each stake-holder on that poker table and dissecting their behavior in accordance with the first principles of economics: scarcity and choice. However, the insights only go as far as the developed world does. In the last 3 chapters where Harford tries to similarly explain the woes of the poor and developing worlds with examples of Cameroon, Belgium and China; his views quickly appear shallow and cliche, lacking the same wisdom as the rest of the book. 70% of the book is therefore a 5-star, and the rest is a 2-star.
The book loses its panache is in trying to decipher globalization and the developed world through the "X-ray goggles of the undercover economist". Harford falls into the trap of taking the usual one-dimensional view of large developing countries (India and China in particular) as if they are obviously in a certain step in their evolution to become more and more like the developed world. These simplifications might be half true, but hardly insightful. Any statement of generalization about either India or China is like generalizing about North and South Americas combined (a contiguous land-mass with about a billion people) or Europe and USA combined (the developed nations with about a billion people). How valuable or insightful can any statement about the Americas as one entity or USA & Europe as one entity be? It is as futile, therefore, to attempt the same for either India or China without having an appreciation or perspective on the infinite diversity of the subject.
With the Undercover Economist, Tim Harford de-mystifies the wiggling jelly of economics (where you cannot kill farm-destroying birds without suffering population explosion of farm-destroying insects and so on). What sound like conundrums are actually logical explanations of common-sense causal chains. For example, he explains that "more rational the behavior of stock market investors, the more erratic the behavior of the stock market becomes." I try to summarize: rational investors would buy shares today if it was obvious that they would go up tomorrow, but then everyone would buy today driving the price high enough so that it cannot go higher tomorrow. I was caught up in the inherent goodness that exixts in all people (Ruth, Aunt Sid, Rudy, Daisy, even May...) only to be caught off guard by the insanity in the inherent badness that also exists near the end of the book. The resilency of humankind is also an important theme in the book. I'll admit, I needed a good ending. It didn't happen, but it was one that leaves you pondering for a long time.

The story is about a boy(Omri) who finds a locked cupboard in a garbage can in the streets of London. When his mother gives him a key that fits no lock in his house, he tries the key on the cupboard it opens! And the story goes farther when he puts a plastic Indian he got from his friend Patric, in the cupboard, and it comes to life!! That was the "Indian in the Cupboard". In the "Return of the Indian", Omri brings back his Indian(Little Bear) and a cowboy, theres even more fun. But when something Happens to Little Bear, Omri must bring even more plastic figures to life, like a very patient and kind nurse, A marine squad with a howitzer and blazing machine guns, and a load of Iroquois tomahawks that want revenge on the English for burning their homes. I loved the action and suspense in this book. I liked the creative storyline, but I think the Author rushes a certain part of the book. If you have read the fist book in this magical series, you'll love the second!

Customer Review: Our spiritual paths are wrought and forged from the crucibles of our lives; however, the wonderful thing is that there are also more innocuous reformations for that as well-books, movies, music, people, etc. Everything in life we experience is a rendering for our soul and our spiritual path. As we become conscious of this it is more congruously applicable. For the reason why I have decided to sojourn with that topic is due to the devastating feedback this book has received. It is not that the book should receive five stars or one, the issue is that if you feel that this book is resonant with your soul do not allow the reviews to obviate you from that position. Spirituality is the individual pursuit for one to understand the essences of life, it is not like religion, there is no solidarity.
For me this book was extremely thought provoking, I have thirty pages of notes subsequent to my reading. While I disagree with Zukav on about seventy percent of the book, merely reading it caused me to scribe my own interpretations of the topics that of which I disagreed. Unfortunately, my cerebral spam filter did not allow much of the book to be applied to my base program. I often times found myself pondering, in opposition, more than reading. I drifted off far more than I have with any other book and was "literaturally" placed in a comatose state much of the time. It was indeed, at times, strenuous to overcome the extreme disparity of ideologies between Zukav and me.
Now, I will delve into my severe disagreements:
- I disagreed emphatically with his interpretations of karma and reincarnation, and at times they were quite odious to me. His rendering of how a new life will pay the karmic ancestral debt of its previous life is not something I can fathom. For I feel that we "reap what we sow" in life whether we realize it or not. This may sound repugnant to the previous sentence, but I personally do not believe in karma.
- There was reference that a drunk driver being judged and sentenced is acceptable, but individuals who beat you nearly to death and are not prosecuted is non-judgmental good karma. If that makes any sense at all please further elaborate or correct me if I am wrong.
- I thought his coin of marriage as a "spiritual partnership" was a derivative of spiritual ingenuity and I now refer to it as that, but I found myself disgusted by some of his perceptions of what constitutes that. Speci...

Customer Review: Our 3 y.o. daughter is obsessed with the movie 'Cars'. One night on a shopping trip I brought this book home on a whim. Not a single bedtime has gone by since without reading this book. She loves it so much that she wants desperately to learn to read it for herself. She even recognized the word 'McQueen' repeated throughout the book and reads that word on her own now. The book is already well loved and dog eared but standing up to it all.
The pictures in the book are hand-drawn and give a high-level overview of the story. It skips many of the details in the movie but my daughter doesn't seem to care very much about accuracy, detail or that it looks different than what's in the movie.
We've read hundred of books to her but none have sparked her interest quite like this. I don't know if it's timing because she's getting older or the tie-in with the movie. I don't care even if it seems over-commercialized. Whatever keeps her interested in reading is what counts. I'll surely be buying more books in the series.
