Customer Review: As a developmental and behavioral pediatrician, I have spent a great deal of time working with children like Rick Lavoie talks about in his book. These children want to have friends and want to be good friends to others. They struggle to understand the social underpinnings, however, which leads to misunderstandings and sorrow from losing friends, or not even beginning to make a friend. This book looks at the neurodevelopmental issues that these children face, provding the adults who live and work with them more insight into their struggles. He basically is challenging us to step back and decipher what the child's intent was in a situation, rather than just jump to conclusions that frequently are very negative toward the child.
Whether the child has ADHD, learning disabilities, Asperger Syndrome, or some other disability/disorder, taking time to understand why the child's attempts at social interaction is not working, and developing a plan of intervention and accommodation based on that understanding is what will make a positive difference. I think that all parents, teachers, and other professionals who work or live with these children should read this book.

Customer Review: I have been reading this book for about five days. I usually burn through a book rather quickly so this one is a slower read for me as it is not a long book.
I believe the primary purpose of a book is to open our minds for learning- expansion. Some do it through being a truly enjoyable read- I do not find that to be the case with this one. Don't get me wrong, I like the concept of sharing the insights of one flawed human with another. Misery loves company and seeing that I am not alone in my ineptness provides some relief.
What I struggle with is Mr. Palmer's use of humor. For me, it is way to predictable and pulls from the overall work. As an example, Robert Fulghgum says, "Don't worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you." That is slightly ironic and humorous-it adds to his work. Mr. Palmer's are not up to the same level.
It probably sounds like I am panning this book- not the case. I am glad I am reading it. Dealing with life's everyday grind- more importantly sharing the experiences with others is invaluable. This book does that very well.

Customer Review: I was a fat child, teen and twenty-something and then disovered exercise and eating right in my thirties and the weight all came off. I was focused I had my own INO's - 'Just Do It' and 'Don't think about what you want now, think about how you'll feel after' but I have allowed job/life stress derail my focus (and subsequently 10 o 50lbs returned). I have been striving to get back to 'that place' where 'I work' and this book reminded me of the things I need to do to get back there and STAY there this time.
This is a good book even if you haven't ever been obese, have just a little weight to lose, or even none at all, but just want to live better and feel better - all the tools are here.

Customer Review: This is one of those books that tells a story with just the pictures. If you have a small child, you are 'explaining' the pictures and adding these words in that is all dialog. At 8pm, I don't want to make up a story around a book. I want to read a book to my kid.
Although the illustrations are cute, I still wish there was more narrative.

Customer Review: If you have visited Fenway Park in the past decade, then you are well aware of the colorful T-shirts that are hawked outside the Park. The "YANKEES SUCK" T-shirts are part of the soft underbelly of the culture of Red Sox Nation. I find the phrase and Red Sox fans' continued use of the phrase to be sophomoric, at best. But, it is what it is, and it is part of the Fenway experience.
The two young ne'er-do-wells who conceived of the T-shirt franchise are Ray Lemoine and Jeff Newman. They made a lot of money selling those souvenirs of the Red Sox-Yankees rivalry, and decided to travel the world. If you are a rich, young Red Sox fan, what constitutes the ultimate "Road Trip"? Their peregrinations led them eventually to Iraq in 2004, in the early days of the U.S. occupation of Baghdad. They found work volunteering for a non-government agency that was set up to serve as a liaison between the Coalition Provision Authority (CPA) and the Iraqi people. From their unique perspective, they observed and wrote about the initial stages of the U.S. efforts to bring order out of the chaos of the post-Saddam era. In collaboration with Donovan Webster, they assembled their thoughts into the book, "Babylon by Bus." Their account provides an interesting counterpoint to the memoirs I have read and recounted in the pages of The White Rhino Report.
These hard-drinking sons of the counter culture offer their unique perspective on what they observed on the ground in Baghdad. A quotation on the book's dust jacket sums up very well the zeitgeist of this book:
"If Iraq is a Shakespearean tragedy, `Babylon by Bus' is its Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, without the funny ending."
Their route to Iraq took them through Israel and included dangerous encounters with Israeli security officials as they attempted to visit Nablus in the Palestinian West Bank. Their brief sojourn in Israel was memorable and prompted an observation that I found intriguing:
