Making Informed Medical Decisions: Where to Look and How to Use What You Find
by Darol Joseff, Nancy Oster, Lucy Thomas
Amazon Price: $14.00
Customer Review: In a time of personal crisis, when you or a loved one is stricken with a serious illness, it's daunting task, both emotionally and intellectually, to inform yourself fully. There's so much to learn, and it's often so scary and confusing. It's hard to know where to go, and what information to trust. The temptation is to simply place your faith blindly in your doctor's recommendation, and hope for the best. And yet, it's clear that the best medical decisions are fully informed and made in partnership with physicians. This excellent guide is the perfect companion for patients and their families to learn how to negotiate the health care system, make the best choices, and get the best care possible. It's accessible, thorough and above all, intelligent. It makes the issues comprehensible to someone unfamiliar with the medical world, yet never condescends. It's exactly the kind of book I could have really used when I was diagnosed with cancer twelve years ago, and I'm so grateful it now exists. These are tools that everyone needs.

How to Find the Best Doctors: Florida

Customer Review: This book was a great help in finding a doctor, and I found a new site to Find a Doctor called AppointmentNet that goes well with this book - it's the only place on the web that I have found that you can find a doctor, schedule an appointment, request prescriptions, and ask doctors questions. You can only do these things with member doctors, but you can at least search and get contact info for all doctors in the US. Their search was easy to use, and only took me 3 clicks to get the most relevant results for me. I was also able to save my favorite searches and favorite doctors in my account. I think this site makes a great companion to this book, and should be used in conjunction with the doctor selection advice from the book.

Customer Review: I have been using this book in my search for a PCP. One thing that stricks me as odd is the lack of consistency from year to year. One thing I'd expect of a top doctor is that he or she would be nominated year after year but after siting down in the library with multiple aditions not quite half the doctors are represented for multiple years. Also as another reviewer noted there is little about bed side manner. My current PCP has been in every adition of the book yet I want to switch becuase I'm not comfortable with his bedside manner. I've seen 2 physicians out of this book and I continue to look.

Customer Review: The Castle Connolly Guide is an invaluable resource for women, men, children, of all ages. It is the book to turn to when seeking medical care in all the specialties. Easy to use, and reader-friendly, the book includes helpful sections of the ABMS Boards, selected resources, managed care organizations and hospital information by county. It is so difficult today to select a physician just from the directory your insurance carrier provides. Your first step should be the Castle Connolly Guide which can help you select a primary care physician as well as any specialist. Or, in the reverse, when someone recommends a doctor, first check on his credentials in the guide to find out if he is board certified, and by what board, where he went to Med School, which residencies were completed and in what program, and where he has hospital affiliations. I was surprised at the low price for all the information the book has to offer.Bravo Castle Connolly for producing the DEFINITIVE guide to doctors in the metro area. I can't wait for the Florida edition so I can send it to my friends down south...
