Skype Hacks: Tips & Tools for Cheap, Fun, Innovative Phone Service (Hacks)
by Andrew Sheppard
Amazon Price: $16.47
Customer Review: A generally well-written book, but offers few nifty insights to save more money or get more service. Look, download Skype and start using it; if you want to go beyond what's obvious from simple use, google will have what few insights are out there; no book will offer a wealth of tips because Skype isn't that kind of produce/service. Secret commands or "hacks" just don't exist for Skype.
And why does the author put that bizzare tip on how to physically cut your phone lines??
The one thing I really wanted to have more info on--how to integrate Skype long distance into your existing home phones with Skype's products under Shop->Accessories--the book barely mentioned as Option 1 of several. Very little help.
Cheap Web Tricks! Build and Promote a Successful Web Site Without Spending a ...
Amazon Price: $20.00
Customer Review: Perhaps it's just in my nature, or simply just the way I was brought up (I'm always looking for a bargain)... but I didn't learn anything new from reading this book.Having said that, Cheap Web Tricks! Build and Promote a Successful Web Site Without Spending a Dime is a book that covers a lot of ground making it a good point of reference for anyone wanting a site starting out from scratch. In fact, the first part of the book takes you through the process of getting a site online without dealing with all the unnecessary details that inevitably get in the way.
Needless to say, this was not what I was expecting when I first opened the book. I guess I was just blind to fact that the word "build" was in the title but I was hoping for a lot more pages on the promotion side of things, so that I could pick up a few new ideas on the way.
One nice surprise was the section on making money from your site as it wasn't something I was expecting. Not only does it give you an overview of the various different ways you can make money from a web site, but also realistic with describing the results you can expect.
This has to be the reason why I'd still recommend it for the complete beginner. Of course, the book simply isn't big enough to go into all the details, nor does it claim to, but it goes a long way to giving an overview of what's involved in owning a web site. For many beginners, this is exactly what they need to know before starting out!
The Amazon Kindle Basic Web Wireless Service: Why It Is a Revolutionary Featu...
by Stephen Windwalker
Amazon Price: $1.99
Customer Review: Kindle is an experiment and those who want to participate in it pay a substantial upfront charge. Anyone who thinks it's too expensive, too constricting or too risky can wait on the sidelines and see. What bothers me is that so many people are evaluating this product using either the paper book, or their own wish list of features as a standard. I personally prefer to read books on my Kindle rather than on a computer or on paper.
I have accumulated literally a ton of books in my lifetime and have no desire to add any more to my collection, unless it's what I consider a collectible, in which case I'll buy it in paper. Incidentally, I have reached the same conclusion about my music collection. The iPod is just what I need, so I use it. I don't begrudge Apple or Amazon the fees or restrictions, because they offer a quality product and service for the price.
I have a laptop that I use to access to video clips, play DVDs, read blogs, news, search via Google and use email. I don't see any advantage to using a Kindle for any that. Adding a fraction of an ounce or a penny of cost to the Kindle in order to add any of those features would disappoint me.
Amazon obviously put a lot of though and research into this venture and I hope that it works out for them and for us. If they have to make adjustments as time goes on so be it. Like Apple, they provide an excellent product at an initially high price. In Kindle's case I estimate that I'll get my money's worth over about a two-year period. Users' mileage will vary. Similarly, my five year old PowerBook G4 doesn't owe me a penny. And Amazon, it seems to me, is closer to the ideal of excellent service and support for a reasonable cost than Apple. Let's hope it stays that way.
Finally, anyone who feels that people should be able to drop their computer's internet access because they own a Kindle are to me a little off base. It's for reading text. Increasing the list of Kindle books, working out a solution to the PDF problem and the next page button are what interest me most.
Talk Is Cheap: Switching to Internet Telephones
by James Gaskin
Amazon Price: $15.56
Customer Review: Now that there are alternatives to using Ma Bell, people are switching (or contemplating it) to broadband phone services. Granted, those on dialup are still out of luck, but some of the services offered provide motivation to get a broadband account. With the proliferation of broadband phone companies, it gets confusing when trying to decide which service is the best, or which one offers the options you need most.
This book explains the services that broadband companies like VONAGE offer, as well as the ones that companies like Skype offer. It also explains (in the first chapter) how internet phones work, as well as an explanation how Voice Over IP works. I also liked the analogy about how innovation over the years has forced traditional phone companies however grudgingly to offer better service. It makes one wonder how they eventually will adapt to VOIP.
There's also a chapter devoted to features that you now pay for that you can get for free using an Internet phone (several of them are the various fees your phone company adds on to your bill), such as call waiting and forwarding. I find it interesting how the phone company manages to slip in various fees as a "cost of doing business."
911 service is also touched upon. Broadband phones will likely have complete 911 service within the next two years, whereas their computer-centric counterparts may not for a few years. It seems to be one drawback to using this type of technology, but one that will likely be ironed out the more popular this technology becomes.
This is a great "consumer guide" to Internet telephony, one that you should buy if you're considering the move to Internet phones.
