The Inner Game of Tennis: The Classic Guide to the Mental Side of Peak Perfor...
by W. Timothy Gallwey
Amazon Price: $10.20
Customer Review: I have been a student of the Inner Game of Tennis for over 30 years now and Tim Gallwey's book is still the best book ever written describing how the mind and body work so that we can play at our very best. Tim has completely changed not only my playing but my entire tennis life and as a result, I have written my own book called Tennis: Play the Mental Game which will teach you the practical applications to playing the inner game. I recommend to all my book owners and students that they read Tim's book. There are many other so called sports psychologists out there that try to say the same things Tim is saying but they just don't succeed. Tim's book is and will be a classic for as long as people play tennis. David Ranney, www.maxtennis.com.

A Million Little Pieces
by James Frey
Amazon Price: $10.85
Customer Review: I set a high bar for stories like these. After reading Dry by Burroughs, it is hard to find a story/memoir that measures up. I enjoyed Frey's adventure/struggle in rehab, but it left me longing for more of what got him there.

The story takes you through a nice love story and along the way you find yourself attached and rooting for Frey's success, which seems to be up against all odds.

If you happen to be an addict as well, this story will drag you along some very familiar streets. Those who have felt these same feelings will be able to see where it all can end.

In the end I found myself looking forward to the quotes and secular wisdom that Frey found from his little book of Tao and had me cheering for the simplicity and wisdom he was able to draw from it.

Frey may be a one in a million case, or maybe he is just a good writer; either case he has done well and you will be a slightly better person for reading this book (you will not want to fall this deep into addiction).

Finally, the last page will rip your heart out as you see the truth behind the 15% statistic that is quoted too often throughout the book and why Frey truly is one in a million.

The Purpose-Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For?
by Rick Warren
Amazon Price: $14.95
Customer Review: My copy, from Christmas 2004, says "over 15 million copies sold". I see cover copy on books in stores now showing 20 or 30 million sold.

So, this is not a new or little-known book, and obviously, many people have read it and find it very good, and indeed it is. Warren gives five Biblical purposes for life, consistently using scripture (in many different translations where they help convey meaning). And while the book does occasionally reference other "PDL" products like the journal, it doesn't appear to be a sales tool for these other products.

In fact, the The Purpose-Driven Life Journal in conjunction with a good study translation (New American Standard, New Internation, or King James) is a great way to study and make notes.

Creative Curriculum for Preschool
by Diane Trister Dodge, Laura J Colker, Cate Heroman
Amazon Price: $47.65
Customer Review: This book is a college textbook for me, but because our state requires all early childhood centers to use this curriculum, I am keeping this book. It has great ideas on how to stop children from biting, to how to get children more involved in the activity centers that you plan daily. If you need a nice comprehensive resource this is definitely one you want to look into.

Where the Heart Is (Oprah's Book Club)
by Billie Letts
Amazon Price: $11.16
Customer Review: This is the first book I have read from Ms. Letts. I think she has a unique style of writing. Her characters are believable. I enjoyed the book thoroughly and could not put it down. I kept wanting to know what was next. I was only disappointed with the end. I always want to know more. It left me hanging.

Prep: A Novel
by Curtis Sittenfeld
Amazon Price: $11.16
Customer Review: I really like the teen books, but this was a disappointment. I didn't get very far before I felt that there were things that I didn't want to read about. There were too many mentions of things that I didn't want to be hearing about, sex, and names of things that I just didn't want in a book. I read for entertainment, not education. If I had kids, I would not want them reading this.

Digital Fortress: A Thriller
by Dan Brown
Amazon Price: $7.99
Customer Review: Yes, this book is a page turner. You read along because you hope the nonsense get less and turns into something which make sense.

On the technology level, the book is hilareous. Altough a 3 million CPU computer to break codes using brute force could very well be reality, and even putting such a decoder in an infinite loop might be possible, the explanation of the design demonstrates complete lack of knowledge. Contrary to popular Star Trek scenes when computers burn out if they are overloaded, modern processors DO get hotter at higher load. But to assume that cooling systems are inadequate in such a design is nonsense. And making it a vital part of the plot that the building is pitch dark because of power shortage is disturbing. Why would that happen. The USA government was on too tight a budget to invest in emergency lighting?

Of course the FTP, X-eleven (X11) and PEM (PAM) firewalls are nonsense as well. Those names are just pulled out of some Unix glossary and used without knowing what they mean and not even using the correct spelling. In a novel where technoly plays such an important role, the reader must have the feeling that the plot is viable. Even if it is fiction, it should not be fantasy.

But the worst part is at the very end of the book. Half of the book deals with the hunt for a ring. Fine, if at the end turns out that the ring was a red herring. One can live with that if that is the way how a story is composed. But to come up in the last 20 pages with lines of orphan code which contain an encrypted message is too much. Which lines? Which program? Isn't the plot of the book based upon the fact that the worm is ENCRYPTED? How in heaven can someone distinguish orphan lines from the other parts of the code?

It really looks like Dan Brown counted the pages, found that he only had to write 20 more to satisfy the publisher, and came up with the weakest imaginable solution to end this plot.

The book is a insult to everyone with basic computer knowledge or an IQ over 70.

The Prop Builders Molding & Casting Handbook
by Thurston James
Amazon Price: $13.59
Customer Review: I have no experience in casting, and don't want to make any more costly mistakes than necessary. This was a very informative book that has given me much more confidence and knowledge to start.
It is the best book I have found so far for my needs, which is actually for casting miniature (1:20.3 scale) details for an outdoor train layout. However, the methods explained are very widespread, and would suit most needs, I would think.

Knights And Castles (Magic Tree House Research Guide, paper)
by Will And Ma Osborne
Amazon Price: $4.99
Customer Review: This is a wonderful book for kids of all ages. The reference works in back to museums, internet sites and other books is well done. I recommend this book for any one who has children interested in Knights and Castles!

How the Other Half Lives (Penguin Classics)
by Jacob A. Riis
Amazon Price: $11.20
Customer Review: Few books in American history have had the social impact that Jacob A. Riis's How the Other Half Lives had. Riis spent years crawling through the slums of New York's Lower East Side in the later half of the nineteenth-century, always with a local guide sympathetic to his cause. He hoped, through the evolving technological advances of photography and his published, emotional plea, to rouse the well-to-do citizens of New York into helping the millions of poor and impoverished, native and immigrant alike, which continued to swell the city's population. In order for them to have had the chance of becoming productive American citizens, they must first have been given the opportunity at a fair start, which the abject state of the tenement buildings were unable to provide.

The first problem was the tenement itself. Usually a building, four to six stories high, intended for the occupancy of just a few families, soon had over a hundred people packed into every nook that could fill a human body. Most interior rooms never saw the light of day. Fresh air was a rare commodity, leaving most residents to breathe the same stale air day and night. The maze of tight, blind passageways created to fit each family made it impossible for firemen to reach helpless victims trapped on the upper floors, compounded by the fact that most fire escapes were blocked with residents' furniture, trapping more even still. Overall, the filth of the structures proved most offensive to the senses. One such building was so dubbed the "Dirty Spoon" because the grime on the walls had effectively made it fire proof (Riis 30). Rear tenements, built in empty courts behind the street buildings, were usually worse, little more than dilapidated hovels cut off from light by the surrounding structures.

Despite this vision of abject poverty, and indeed starvation was prevalent, many in the tenements were not what would have been considered poor. Some, in fact, earned a decently living for the era. So why didn't they move? The real question to be asked is, to where would they move? Tenement houses were the norm in New York, each as good (or lousy) as the next. Additionally, the rents paid by most of these residents (especially blacks) were very high, often amounting to more than a week's wage. Only the abundantly wealthy could afford better, while the middle and lower classes were left to the stink of places like "The Bend" on Mulberry Street, which Riis considers ...
