Microsoft Office 2007: Introductory Concepts and Techniques, Windows XP Edition by Gary B. Shelly, Thomas J. Cashman, Misty E. Vermaat Amazon Price: $95.95
Customer Review: I purchased this book for my CIS 120 class (that is intro to micro-computers). This book is an excellent teaching guide to learn everything there is to know about Microsoft Office software. It is very detailed and it gives you examples and you will learn hands on. This is an excellent book for anyone that need to learn or even need a refresher course. This book have step-by-step instructions. I highly recommend this book.
Don't Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability, 2nd Edition by Steve Krug Amazon Price: $26.40
Customer Review: If you are looking for a book with the main principles about web usability do not hesitate and buy this book. It might be a little bit outdated but 90% of the book is still totally true. Don't miss it!!
GO! with Microsoft Office 2007 Introductory (Go! Series) by Shelley Gaskin, Robert L. Ferrett, Alicia Vargas, Suzanne Marks Amazon Price: $99.60
Customer Review: The book was just as described if not better. It arrived in a timely matter. I was very satisfied.
Non-Designer's Design Book, The (3rd Edition) by Robin Williams Amazon Price: $19.79
Customer Review: Upon receiving the book I was surprised how thin it was. But overall I am very happy about the purchase. A thicker book might have been more complex. This has simple language, it's easy to read and easy to apply. After reading most of the book I had to create a flyer, and following the tips made the work easier and the result much better: even graphics professionals say the result is pretty good!
Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach (4th Edition) by James F. Kurose, Keith W. Ross Amazon Price: $72.53
Customer Review: It's too bad that Amazon doesn't include reviews for previous editions of textbooks. The previous editions of this book had forty-two total reviews, and they average out to 4.5 stars. Unfortunately, this edition's rating is skewed by some students who appear to attributing their poor grade to the book.
I'm a fan of these authors. If you look at a previous edition of Computer Networking you'll see just how great this book's reviews are.
New Perspectives on Microsoft Office Excel 2007, Comprehensive (New Perspecti... by June Jamrich Parsons, Dan Oja, Roy Ageloff, Patrick Carey Amazon Price: $88.15
Customer Review: Three cheers for this book and the other Thomson/Course Technology "Comprehensive" books addressing various applications in Microsoft Office 2007 (and, earlier, in Office 2003, etc.). The books are designed for successful use (either on a self-study basis, or in formal courses) on the part of those who, starting with no prior knowledge, want to bring themselves up to a skill level corresponding to what Microsoft terms "Microsoft Certified Application Specialist." Here are some of the distinguishing features of this Excel 2007 book:
(1) The book makes effective use of color, including frequent and well annotated screen shots.
(2) The book presents material in a highly readable, step by step way. (This might be a disadvantage for fast-track users of the book who do not need or want that much "hand holding," but it does mean that just about any motivated person who works conscientiously with the book can achieve success.)
(3) Each of the 12 chapters is set in the context of a "case" providing meaningful settings within which the application potential of Excel is brought into focus, usually in a "business-related" way. (This contrasts with some books that describe "how to do this" and "how to do that," but might lack motivation for WHY it might be of interest to be able to do this or do that.) Peripheral benefit: the book provides an informal introduction to some aspects of business, in the sense of extracting information from data to provide insights and perhaps support fundamental decision making.
(4) Each chapter concludes with a set of five exercises or "cases," starting with an exercise in which the reader is asked to extend the material developed in the body of the chapter. Starting-point workbooks for these exercises (and for the case presented in the body of the chapter itself) can be downloaded from the publisher's website. Workbook "solutions" for the cases can be downloaded by instructors using the book in a course setting. (Although some of the exercises include "explore" steps, the exercises do largely tend to take a "follow the bouncing ball" approach, which helps the user ease into the material but probably falls short for fast-track users who might want to be challenged to be more creative in applying the material, i.e., "Here's a situation, and here's the information that is to be developed in this situation. Starting from scratch and using your own wits entirely, develop the information. No ...
Database Systems: Design, Implementation, and Management, Eighth Edition by Peter Rob, Carlos Coronel Amazon Price: $94.21
Customer Review: The online content is finally up, but that's still the stupid part about it. It comes with a sleave in the back to fit a CD, they should've just waited and released the content with the book. It's very annoying to have to log in and find this crap all the time.
Another thing, as a student, I hate how much this book wants you to keep drawing ERDs! Relationships are not that hard to understand, we don't need to keep drawing ten diagrams each chapter. It's even worse for students that are required to turn in digital copies for assignments, because that means you should probably already have Visio and the understanding of how to use it. Maybe if they wrote a preface chapter on some Visio basics of how to make ERDs look like theirs would help some.
I'm not at all impressed with this book.
Systems Analysis and Design, Seventh Edition (Shelly Cashman) by Gary B. Shelly, Thomas J. Cashman, Harry J. Rosenblatt Amazon Price: $90.05
Customer Review: It's a textbook. As textbooks go, it's pretty good. Very few textbooks are really worth the prices that are demanded.
As is typical with textbooks having to do with technology, there are many errors. Most glaring are the online audio files that do not match up with the text. Presumably, the textbook has changed, but the audio files have not.
All textbooks, especially those in engineering and technology concentrations, should be made available on the Internet at significantly reduced prices.
