Victorias, cabriolets, phaetons, and roadsters -cars from a lower-tech but higher-style era -- will be displayed at the Santa Rosa Concours d'Elegance on Sunday at the Burbank Center for the Arts. Trucks, horseless carriages, motorcycles, even children's peddle cars will provide a living history display of 20th Century transportation. Besides restored vehicles owned by car buffs from all over Northern California, there will special exhibits by the Behring Auto Museum, Blackhawk, and the Towe Ford Museum in Sacramento, the world's most complete Ford museum. From Behring comes a 1906 Panhard Double Phaeton (C.S. Rolls, of future Rolls-Royce fame, was the London dealer for the Panhard company, whose cars won road races from 1891 to 1900); and a 1932 Auburn Cabriolet, whose Lycoming V-12 engine helped it win speed records in hill-climbing events. Towe will display models from Ford's ``Alphabet Series,'' produced in the company's first six years, beginning with the 1903 Model A Runabout, which marked the beginning of the company's success as a maker of cheap cars for the ``common man.'' Models B, C, F, K, N, R, and S, and ending with the 1908 Model T Runabout, were produced. (Historians assume that the missing letters represent models that died on the drawing board.) Automobile art and memorabilia will also be on display and for sale. Show hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Judging begins at 10:30 a.m.; awards will be presented at 3 p.m. The concours is sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America. It is sponsored by Santa Rosa East Rotary, which distributes proceeds to Sonoma County charities. Admission is $5 general, free to children 10 and under. Hundreds of cars and trucks -- vintage, new and hot rods -- will descend on Santa Rosa on Sunday for the 13th Annual ``Show and Shine'' car show. Funds raised benefit the nonprofit Northern California Engineering Contractors Association and Maintenance Superintendents Association scholarships. More than 300 cars are expected to crowd Juilliard Park on Santa Rosa Avenue between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Class trophies will be awarded and there will be food and drinks, contests and music. Admission is free.

Customer Review: I was a little disappointed. I had hoped to find a thrilling suspense and, at times, I did. However, it was intertwined with useless details (for example, the main character is a psychologist, and the book goes into details about her unrelated clients' problems several times) where I just felt like they either needed to fill pages or simply wanted more suspense by adding these asides between clues. I didn't want to stop reading because I was adamant to find out who it was, but I was bored at times. It felt to me like adding suspense in a movie by pausing and showing a few holes of golf before returning to its plot. I liked the plot overall and felt the book had a good way of keeping you guessing, but by the middle of it all I was doing was keeping a mental countdown of how long it would be until I could finally finish it.

Customer Review: I admit that I'm a very unique type of NASCAR fan. I love the drivers, love reading about them, checking out the standings, and perusing all the gossip about their personal lives. I don't actually like watching the races. See, how odd is that? Sure, occasionally I'll stumble into a room where the race is on television (thanks to my mom and stepfather, who are NASCAR fanatics), but other than that I won't waste hours sitting down to watch cars drive in endless circles. But, okay, yes, the crashes are kind of cool!
I was always a Dale Earnhardt fan. The number three car got my vote every time. When he died in a crash at the Daytona 500 on February 18, 2001, I was devasted--as were thousands upon thousands of NASCAR enthusiasts around the globe. The thing about NASCAR is that its devout fans come from every walk of life, from every part of the world, and they are a dedicated, loud-mouth bunch of people. They're also a family. When one of their "own" dies, as on that day when the racing world lost Dale Earnhardt, everyone mourned. Even fans who didn't like Earnhardt (and by that I mean they dared to cheer for another driver, like Jeff Gordon or Tony Stewart), sadly and publicly grieved the loss of a legend.
Although I now root for Dale Earnhardt, Jr. in the number eight car, I still remember his father with pride. I still look for memorabilia with that number three. I still read books like SPEED SHOW, which discuss NASCAR, its history, and the mark it's made on the racing world. Filled with numerous facts, figures, and full-color photos, SPEED SHOW is sure to delight any and all NASCAR fans, regardless of age. The legacy of "The Intimidator" lives on today, as well it should.

Customer Review: Thumps DreadfulWater, Cherokee and a former California cop now living in the town of Chinook adjacent to the Blackfoot Rez and trying to be a professional photographer is called in to photograph a murder victim at the luxury resort and casino the tribal band is due to be opening soon. The woman in his life, who is also the tribal leader asks him to investigate in an attempt to keep her teen son who was totally opposed from the project from getting mixed up in the murder as a suspect. As Thumps investigates more outsiders visiting Chinook end up dead. Gently humorous mystery with a strong sense of place and realistic characters make the debut of this series a winner. King is always a joy to read. The delightful humor that made Medicine River one of my all time favorite books shows up here. I am shocked that the second book in the series was never published in the U.S.
