Twenty-one Northern California residents of normal intelligence are beginning a four-day training session today, with three nationally certified instructors. The topic of the curriculum: How to correctly install a child safety seat in a car, and a child in a seat. Why would it take four days of training with hot-shot instructors to learn this? Parents of babies and toddlers have at least suspected the answer: There are, without exaggeration, about 100,000 combinations of car safety seats and cars according to National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Jim Hall. And safety seat installation directions -- if you have them -- are difficult to follow. The students' ``final exam'' will be a car seat check for anyone who wants to find out if a car seat (with or without child) is properly installed. ``It's not an easy job. Mistakes are commonplace,'' said Lynn Walton, a health information specialist with the Sonoma County Department of Health Services Prevention and Planning Division. ``There are a lot of compatibility problems. You have to find the right car seat for your automobile. Not every car seat sits properly in every car. You have to figure out which direction the seat faces, where the retainer clip goes, and do I need a locking clip? It may take 35 minutes to an hour to get the seat in properly the first time, especially if you have to use a locking clip.'' Used seats pose additional problems. They may not come with directions. And you don't know the seat's history. It may have been subject of a recall. And seats that have been involved in a crash should be replaced, Walton noted. Walton, coordinator of Safe Kids of Sonoma County and a student in this week's class, has attended two car-seat safety checks offered to the public by trained installers. Though she wasn't trained in making the checks, she compiled the data sheets filled out by those who were. At one in August, the 19 people who came had made 61 installation errors; every single seat had at least one. In October, the 29 people who came had made just 66 installation errors. ``The most common problems are that the seatbelt is not holding the seat in tightly,'' Walton said. ``At times we've reached in and grabbed the seat, and it's just flopping around.'' A properly installed child seat should not give more than an inch from side to side, front to back. Another common problem, Walton said, is that ``the harness holding the child in is often not snug enough -- which means if there's a crash, the child could go flying out of the car seat.'' Another strap problem, Walton said, is that they are often threaded through the wrong set of slits in the back of the seat. ``In a rear-facing seat, the straps should be at or below the child's shoulder level. In a forward-facing seat, the straps should be at or above shoulder level,'' she said. And those are the experiences of people who cared enough to check. Automobile accidents are the leading cause of death for children 1 to 4. A General Motors study revealed that 45 percent of the 604 children aged 1 to 4 who died in car crashes in 1997 were not buckled in at all. Of the 1,424 children ages 5 through 15 who were killed, the proportion of unbuckled kids was even higher -- 63 percent. California law requires that all automobile passengers must be buckled up. A child under age 5 or 40 pounds must be restrained in a properly installed safety seat. Many states don't require this, however. The number of seat-car combinations is a daunting factor in this week's training, Walton said. ``The trainers are bringing 30 or 40 types of seats with them. The training participants' cars, 21 of them, will be used as the hands-on models.'' The number of combinations would be reduced to two by a new safety rule the Clinton administration is expected to announce soon, though it will take a generation for a majority of American children to benefit. The rule, which has received final White House approval, would require automakers to build standard child-seat anchors into the back seats of new cars, eliminating the current hodgepodge. New seats would be designed to connect to one of two types of metal anchors. Both types of child seats would come with a top tether for added security. The system will be phased in within five years, but many auto and child-seat makers will offer it sooner, because of its appeal to parents. Some model year 2000 cars available in the fall may be equipped with the new anchors. It's expected to add about $10 per installation to the cost of a car, and $10 to $65 to the cost of a car seat. But since the rule applies only to new cars, parents driving older cars would not benefit for years. According to the market survey firm of J.D. Power & Associates, young families are more likely to drive used cars. Experts say it could take an estimated 10 to 20 years before a majority of cars on the road have the new anchors.

We headed to the the Jersey Shore in August for Kyla's first beach trip (see the other videos) and she was a champion on the plane at 14 months. No baby freakouts or crazy squirming. But having her in her own car seat was well worth the money. She really loved looking over the back seat at the 2-year -old behind us, and saying "hi!" to all the people around. We were in the next to last row, so the line to the bathroom provided lots of people for her to interact with. And she seemed confused but curious by the take-off - no fear. Customer Review: Our spiritual paths are wrought and forged from the crucibles of our lives; however, the wonderful thing is that there are also more innocuous reformations for that as well-books, movies, music, people, etc. Everything in life we experience is a rendering for our soul and our spiritual path. As we become conscious of this it is more congruously applicable. For the reason why I have decided to sojourn with that topic is due to the devastating feedback this book has received. It is not that the book should receive five stars or one, the issue is that if you feel that this book is resonant with your soul do not allow the reviews to obviate you from that position. Spirituality is the individual pursuit for one to understand the essences of life, it is not like religion, there is no solidarity.
For me this book was extremely thought provoking, I have thirty pages of notes subsequent to my reading. While I disagree with Zukav on about seventy percent of the book, merely reading it caused me to scribe my own interpretations of the topics that of which I disagreed. Unfortunately, my cerebral spam filter did not allow much of the book to be applied to my base program. I often times found myself pondering, in opposition, more than reading. I drifted off far more than I have with any other book and was "literaturally" placed in a comatose state much of the time. It was indeed, at times, strenuous to overcome the extreme disparity of ideologies between Zukav and me.
Now, I will delve into my severe disagreements:
- I disagreed emphatically with his interpretations of karma and reincarnation, and at times they were quite odious to me. His rendering of how a new life will pay the karmic ancestral debt of its previous life is not something I can fathom. For I feel that we "reap what we sow" in life whether we realize it or not. This may sound repugnant to the previous sentence, but I personally do not believe in karma.
- There was reference that a drunk driver being judged and sentenced is acceptable, but individuals who beat you nearly to death and are not prosecuted is non-judgmental good karma. If that makes any sense at all please further elaborate or correct me if I am wrong.
- I thought his coin of marriage as a "spiritual partnership" was a derivative of spiritual ingenuity and I now refer to it as that, but I found myself disgusted by some of his perceptions of what constitutes that. Speci...

Customer Review: The Mercy Seat is a rich novel, replete with biblical allusions and biblical themes. It vividly depicts life and the settling of the West during the second half of the 19th century as well as the eternal struggle of good over evil. It is a strong first novel. I found it difficult to get into at the beginning, and I found the ending unsatisfying. But for the most part, it is a gripping read.
The center of the evolving story is the conflict between brothers, recalling biblical struggles between Cain and Abel, Esau and Isaac, etc. John Lodi is a skilled craftsman in the art of gunmaking, and a man of his word; Lafayette [Fate] Lodi is a smooth talker, full of envy. Together they move their families to the San Bois Mountains of Oklahoma; but though they share physical struggles, they have no shared vision. The struggle between the brothers extends to their families, and their communities.
Askew has been compared to Faulkner, in that her themes stress the weight of family history and lore on our lives, our psyches. Additionally, Askew uses the technique of multiple voices in the exposition of the story: Mattie [daughter of John Lodi] is the main narrator, but also narrating portions are her mother, Demaris; Thula Henry, a Choctaw woman with a gift of healing; and several others.
This novel allows you to participate in the heavy cost of settling of America. You encounter: former slaves, still enslaved by prejudice; white men on the run from the law; Native Americans pushed from their homes; Evangelical preachers riding their circuits. You particpate in death, in hunger, in illness, in fear,in helping others to protect yourself, in honoring the miracle and struggle of life.
