Automobile repair shops have a new problem to fix: Thousands of mechanics are retiring or leaving the industry for new jobs, creating a shortage of repair specialists with the skills to work on today's high-tech cars. The automobile repair industry is losing 60,000 technicians every year in the United States through retirement and attrition, yet only 40,000 young people enter the industry each year from high school and college training courses, according to the automobile industry. Meanwhile, the number of cars continues to grow, with 2 million new automobiles added to U.S. roads every year on average. And these cars are more difficult to fix, loaded with computers that control everything from front-wheel traction to the rear-view mirror. It all adds up to more headaches for consumers. With more high-tech cars on the road and fewer skilled mechanics available to fix them, experts say it will become more expensive and less convenient for motorists to get their cars repaired. ``It is going to be harder to get your car fixed in an efficient way,'' said Patrick Sullivan, chairman of the trade technology department at Santa Rosa Junior College and an automotive repair instructor for three decades. ``It is a crisis,'' declares Sherman Titens, president of the Coordinating Committee for Automotive Repair, a federation of automotive trade groups, educators and consumer organizations based in Leawood, Kan. The shortage of repair technicians is beginning to attract attention across the United States, including Sonoma County, according to industry experts and local repair shops. Sullivan said his classes at SRJC cannot turn out graduates fast enough to meet the demand for auto repair technicians in the North Bay. ``I get more phone calls (from employers) than I can send people out,'' Sullivan said. The shortage of repair technicians is the culmination of events that began 15 years ago, when the federal government imposed strict controls on automobile emissions to combat smog. In response, automakers started installing computers in cars to measure and regulate tailpipe emissions. The use of microprocessors spread throughout the automobile, and now control the brakes, engine, transmission, electronics and other operating systems. Today, a new car contains more on-board computer technology than the Apollo 13 spacecraft that carried man to the moon. ``Cars are computers too,'' said Marty Keller, chief of the state Bureau of Automotive Repair in Sacramento. ``The cars that your dad may remember tinkering with in the '60s have no resemblance to what's on the road today.'' Fixing these cars requires a new type of mechanic, one who is as ad ept with a computer as a carburetor. ``For years, you didn't have to be a rocket scientist to work on a car,'' Sullivan said. ``Now, it takes a different kind of person to understand (car repairs) than it did to understand it 30 years ago.'' The spread of technology into automobiles is driving some older mechanics out of the profession. The majority of auto repair technicians are 40 or older, according to industry figures. Some find it too difficult to keep up with rapid changes in technology. ``The type of technician we need is radically changing,'' Titens said. ``We need to find technicians who are learned in things like applied physics, math, chemistry, computer skills, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills.'' To compete with other industries for workers with these skills, automobile repair shops must pay their workers premium salaries. Today, an experienced auto technician can make $45,000 a year. In rare cases, highly-skilled diagnosticians, who pinpoint problems in a car by interpreting computer data, can make up to $150,000 a year, the automobile says. Despite ample job openings and decent salaries, the automobile repair industry is still having problems recruiting young people. Pay levels need to rise even higher to woo young people away from other high-tech careers, Sullivan said. Many kids find it more attractive to repair copier machines and office equipment, because the pay is often better, the work is cleaner, and the employer frequently provides the tools. ``The industry has not realized to attract people who can work on the newer, complicated more sophisticated cars, they have to offer more money,'' Sullivan said. Another part of the problem lies in the U.S. school system, which eliminated many vocational training programs during lean budget times and focused on college prep courses. In Sonoma County, for example, every high school from Petaluma to Cloverdale had an automotive program in the early 1980s. Today, there are six high school automotive repair programs in Sonoma County -- down from 13 in 1982, Sullivan said. Junior colleges are also facing immense challenges. More than 90 percent of the nation's 5,000 college-level auto repair training programs do not have adequate equipment or trained faculty to teach students the latest technology, according to the automotive industry. The image of the automobile repair industry has not helped recruitment efforts. Many consumers have negative perceptions of repair shops, and discourage their children from starting a career repairing cars. As part of the long-term solution, people who own and manage auto repair shops must earn a greater degree of trust from their customers, Keller said. ``Parents have got to believe this is an industry worth seeing their sons and daughters getting involved in,'' Keller said. ``You can't have one without the other. That is a challenge to the repair industry as a whole.'' The automobile industry is attempting to fix the problem itself. In September, members of the automobile industry met in California with educators and state regulators to begin developing a strategy to attract more young people into repair jobs. The group, Automotive Repair Leadership 2000, will issue its report later this year. In Sonoma County, local repair shops are tackling the problem head-on. One car dealership in Santa Rosa, Freeman Toyota/Lexus, is planning to start an apprentice program to train its own technicians. ``I foresee a shortage coming up,'' said Gene Jones, service manager at the dealership. ``If we don't do it, then we are going to be in the same boat as everyone else four or five years from now.'' Next year, repair shops in Sonoma County will start a pool where job applicants can fill out a standardized application and have it distributed to all local members of the Automotive Service Council, a group of automotive repair and body shops working to improve the industry's image. ``It will be good for the applicant, and good for the businesses,'' said local ASC president Harry Strouse, owner of Prism Auto Body in Santa Rosa. There should be plenty of job openings. The attrition rate in repair shops is expected to grow over the next two decades as graying Baby Boomer mechanics retire. At the same time, the complexity of cars will only increase. To combat pollution, California is requiring zero-emission vehicles, like electric cars, and ``hybrid'' vehicles that run on a combination fo power csources. Automakers are continually adding new high-tech gadgets to their cars, ranging from outdoor thermometers to computerized maups that use date from glabal positioning satellites. Technology may make cars run more efficiently, but it will not necessarily make repair technicians more productive, Killer said. Although there are high-tech tools to diagnose problems, each car must be fixed individually. "You can't mass produce repairs," Keller said. Titens does not believe the shortage will drive the price of car repairs up significantly. He said auto manufactuerers are working aggressively to ensure there will be enough technicians and high-tech tools at their dealerships, which traditionally have set the upper ceiling on repair costs in communities. "But in terms of inconvenience, there is no questions we will see more of that." Titens said.
The smog test just got tougher. A clean air bill, signed into law Friday by Gov. Gray Davis, will require motorists in the Bay Area, including much of Sonoma County, to meet more stringent air pollution standards. The advanced testing, already required in the state's smoggiest regions, is likely to start sometime next year in the nine-county Bay Area, affecting an estimated 4.5 million vehicles. Central Valley lawmakers fought for years to impose the enhanced testing requirements, saying wind-blown smog from the Bay Area is a major contributor to inland air quality problems. At a state Capitol bill-signing ceremony, Davis described the law as a matter of fairness. ``The freedom to drive any car you want is the right of every Californian, but so is the freedom to breathe clean air,'' he said. ``This legislation strikes the appropriate balance between the two.'' The new law will bring the enhanced Smog Check II program to the Bay Area, the last major urban region in the state not using advanced testing. Davis said it would eliminate 26 tons of pollutants from the air, the equivalent of removing 425,000 cars from the road. The biennial tests are expected to cost more -- how much more is a matter of debate -- and the tougher standards are expected to double the failure rate for vehicles from 7 percent to 15 percent. Poorly maintained older cars are least likely to pass, mechanics said. Repair bills for vehicles that fail average $144 statewide, according to state figures. Smog tests are required every two years to renew vehicle registrations, but the legislation created exemptions for vehicles less than six years or more than 30 years old. As part of the legislative deal, Central Valley air districts are expected to drop a lawsuit against air quality regulators that threatened funding for Bay Area transportation projects. Bay Area lawmakers fought off previous efforts to impose the enhanced smog test but many -- including the entire Sonoma County delegation -- voted for the measure this year after Senate President John Burton, D-San Francisco, signaled his support. The enhanced smog test, which is meant to test vehicle emissions under operating conditions instead of at idle, received a mixed response from motorists and auto shop owners. ``I'm totally skeptical,'' said Mike Nevin, a San Francisco police officer who lives in Petaluma. ``It makes people feel good but it doesn't mean it's good for the environment.'' Shop owner Dennis Bosch in Petaluma said Smog Check II will ``without a doubt'' help clean the air. The new test will be required in most of the Bay Area, including Sonoma County from Windsor south. Requirements don't change for Mendocino and Lake counties or for Sonoma County residents from Healdsburg north, including Forestville and Guerneville, where smog checks are required only when vehicles change ownership. The tougher smog check was implemented beginning in 1998 in areas including Los Angeles, Riverside, Sacramento and San Diego. Inland testing includes Solano County but until now has stopped at the Sonoma County line. State officials said it will probably be six to nine months before the tests are required in the Bay Area because auto shops must be certified to perform the tests. The test puts vehicles on a treadmill at 15 mph and 25 mph to simulate driving conditions. The treadmill, along with other new equipment and software, will cost about $50,000, shop owners said. The new equipment, plus higher training standards for mechanics, means higher prices for the test. Glenn Mason of the state Department of Consumer Affairs said in other areas the price increased substantially at first but quickly settled to about $10 more. ``I hope nobody tries to take advantage of the situation by charging more than they should be,'' Mason said. ``Initially there will be a spike, but that won't last long'' as competition emerges. The cost of a smog check is unregulated, and ranges from about $25 to $50 locally. Some auto shop customers balked at the expected increase, and others said it was a small sacrifice for cleaner air. ``I think it's a nominal fee for possibly cleaner air,'' said Lance Catarozoli, a technology company vice president who was getting a car repair Friday. ``I don't think it's unreasonable.'' John Troup of J&D Automotive in Petaluma said he expects prices will almost double and several shops will stop offering smog checks. ``I think it's an attack on the automotive industry,'' he said. ``I think we've done a tremendous amount already.'' Mechanic Mark Groszek, who works at Auto and Truck Service of Petaluma, said he's already taking a Santa Rosa Junior College course that will qualify him for the new smog equipment. He believes the air will be cleaner but he said most of the burden will be on low-income people with older cars. ``It seems like the government is trying to get older vehicles off the road. The vehicles that barely got by on the old smog check program will fall flat on their face on the new smog check,'' he said. Craig Olmstead of Petaluma said it makes him a little uncertain about how his 1974 Jimmy will do on its next smog test. Of the 133 licensed shops in Sonoma County, 43 already have one of the newer Smog Check II computer systems installed, Mason said. He said three of Lake County's 10 smog shops have the new equipment and so do three of Mendocino's 14 shops.

Customer Review: Although some of the information presented in the 126-page volume is 15 or more years old, it is still a good place to start when considering an electric vehicle conversion. Mr. Brown does not disappoint with his clear and direct explanations and suggestions.
There is one small technical error concerning wire sizing. The National Electric Code (NEC) and Mil Spec W-5088L may be helpful, here.
Definitely worth the cost and time to read this book.

Customer Review: Let me start off by saying that this book does not bypass taking the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) riding class in anyway for a budding motorcycle rider. If you want to ride a motorcycle then the MSF course is a must period. The MSF class teaches you so much while allowing you to practice in a safe and calm riding environment with trained instructors at your side to ask questions and get help from. Not to mention that some insurance companies will give you a policy discount on your monthly insurance payments for taking and passing the MSF course. You also don't have to do the DMV riding test if you pass the MSF course. So in the end the MSF course is more then worth what you paid to take the course for on top of the safety and riding training you get.
Outside of the MSF course this book is a good primer to mentally prepare you for the key ideas on how to ride a motorcycle and what forces are at work while riding. Ideas like counter steering, smooth control inputs, avoiding target fixation, and a light over view of potential road hazards you might face and many more other topics are all discussed in this book. It also goes on to talk about other areas some people might not think about such as how to select a proper helmet and what to look for in riding gear. It also talks about the effects of lack of sleep, drugs and alcohol all have on a rider. I would recommend this book to anyone who has signed up for the MSF course but has not taken it or who is just interested in the idea of riding a motorcycle. In the end this is a very good primer book if not a refresher for those who have just finished the MSF course and need to brush up a little on some key concepts.

Customer Review: I purchased this book because it was required for my automotive electronics class.. Although it's a two volume set, a lot of the same information can be found on both books. Never the less, it's a nice book to learn from and use as a reference when trouble shooting electrical circuits.
One huge issue though is because it's written with a students perspective in mind the quizzes/questions at the end of each chapter do not come with answers that you can use to cross check!

Customer Review: Wow! Just what I was looking for. Corky has put together a collection of formulas and uncommon sense that is needed to design and build turbo systems. I love it.
I used this book to create an Excel worksheet full of needed design formulas. I can now make tradeoffs and design decisions before I build it, and I have a much better chance of getting what I expect, without a bunch of cut and try and try again attempts.
Corky's book will be a huge help to me, and I imagine it will be to you as well. This may not be the book for someone who is afraid of math, or who does not want to understand something. This book is not a cookbook approach, rather, it is a chef school delivering the reader with enough information to "cook up" his own turbo creation.
If you want the ability and confidence to design and build system that work, and that work the first time, this book will help you.

Customer Review: The publisher's blurb on Amazon here is a bit vague on what this book is actually designed to do. I wish they'd published the author's quote on the Amazon description that they printed on the back of the book. It would have been a clue to me not to buy it (so perhaps that is why they didn't include it). So, I'll type it here for those who may also find it a useful clue:
"When I opened my tutoring center I couldn't find enough reading material for my teenage students, especially the boys. So I started writing short descriptions about car parts aimed at improving reading comprehension. I used simple drawings to help students visualize and associate the car parts with words. Eventually I had enough material for a a complete car book and... well... this is it!"
Having read that on the back, I thought, "Well, of course. This book does read just like a collection of definitions for a juvenile mind that doesn't want to learn as much as skim a concept."
When I got this book, I was hoping for a quick overview of the car. A quick read to look at to gain background understanding before jumping into more complicated books, since I know nothing about cars. It didn't help me much.
Yes, it's a quick read, but it's over-simplified. It's like reading a dictionary without seeing the words in context and hoping to retain the words you learn as useful vocabulary. Or it's like reading only the chapter summaries of a text book which are geared not to help you learn the concept, but to jog your memory after you've read the full material and understand it.
Generally, I have no difficulty absorbing technical information, but this book doesn't give you the full context to grasp the concepts behind the list of "car parts". I plan to keep this book in my library as a quick reference dictionary of sorts, but in retrospect, I wish I had not purchased it. It is badly overpriced and not much use for a novice looking for a cohesive understanding of cars.
