Porrada logo no início da corrida.SBT.As corridas de carro, ou provas de automobilismo, começam praticamente junto ao lançamento dos primeiros carros a gasolina. A primeira competição com carros de corrida oficial aconteceu na França, em 1894. De lá para cá os carros de corrida evoluíram muito, as competições ficaram mais sérias e seletivas e, um esporte foi criado. As provas de automobilismo são realizadas em autódromos, que são pistas (ou circuitos fechados) especialmente construídas para essa prática. Em todo caso, há provas como o Rali, onde os carros de corrida são testados em terrenos acidentados e de difícil acesso. Em corridas de carros, além da velocidade, potência e estabilidade do carro e seu motor, são testadas as habilidades de condução dos pilotos. O combustível usado em carros de corrida, na maioria das vezes, não é o mesmo de carros tradicionais. Os carros de corrida que competem na NASCAR, por exemplo, utilizam gasolina com chumbo. Já os da Fórmula Indy trabalham na base do álcool metílico. Assim como alguns carros tunados, os competidores da Dragsters Top Fuel abastecem com nitrometano. Essa variedade ocorre de acordo com as necessidades dos carros de corrida. Os carros que usam o álcool metanol conseguem maior potência e um grau de segurança, já que, em caso de acidente, o fogo desse combustível pode ser apagado com água. Os carros de corrida podem ser de inúmeros modelos. Desde projetos específicos para pista, com apenas um passageiro, carros tunados ou turbinados até mesmo carros antigos e carros clássicos, todos os modelos podem encontrar sua categoria para ser um carro de corrida. Desse modo, surgiram várias categorias de corridas.Carros de corrida monolugares: nessa categoria são encontradas as provas de automobilismo mais conhecidas. A Fórmula Indy, a Fórmula 1 e a Champ Cars são alguns exemplos. Os carros de corrida dessa categoria são projetados para atingir altas velocidades. Para tanto, são rebaixados, com asas aerodinâmicas frontais e traseiras e rodas largas e descobertas. Nessa categoria também se encaixam os carros de corrida de Kart, geralmente praticado pelos mais jovens, onde o preço dos carros é muito mais baixo e os circuitos mais curtos. Quase todos os grandes pilotos conhecidos hoje iniciaram suas carreiras em carros de corrida de Kart.Carros de corrida para pisos de terra: essas provas acontecem em pistas sem asfalto, no entanto, os terrenos são regulares e a velocidade é maior que a dos ralis. Os principais carros de corrida desse tipo de competição são os Bajas, KartCross, Stock Car, Autocross e Hot Dodge.Carros de corrida Stock Cars: esses carros são responsáveis por uma das provas mais populares do automobilismo. A principal série de corridas dessa categoria é a NASCAR. Os carros de corrida da Stock Car percorrem circuitos parecidos com as corridas de turismo e são muito parecidos com carros de passeio. No entanto, os carros de corrida da NASCAR são verdadeiras máquinas. Todos os carros são tunados, aumentando a potencia do motor e melhorando a aerodinâmica dos originais.Carros de corrida linear: muito confundida com os Rachas de Rua, as corridas lineares consistem num percurso, em linha reta, onde dois carros disputam pela maior velocidade. Em grandes campeonatos cada prova leva o vencedor e uma nova disputa, eliminando o adversário. As velocidades médias nesse tipo de corrida podem atingir os 530 km/h. São encontradas competições desde carros originais de fábrica até os específicos dragsters. Porém, os carros de corrida mais usados nessas corridas são os carros tunados com nitro ou/e turbo.

Customer Review: This is a fine book with lots of good info in it. Beginners to suspension design and tuning will find it fairly easy to understand as this section is well presented though basic. The other sections all do a decent job of covering engines trannys etc. Where this book loses 2 stars is the chassis section which covers tube chassis and honeycomb but doesnt cover either enough for you to actually set about making one for yourself. No practical basic chassis design principles are covered. I really would have liked a set of basic plans for a simple chassis that could be modified as needed individually (see Ron champion book or haynes roadster)

Into the labs, pits and minds of the crews who help bring the exciting sport of NASCAR Racing alive. Designing the intricate cage that the driver sits in. The physics of motion, heat, liquids, air, molecules. Interviews and on-site observations with the "engineers" working on different parts of the engine and chassis.
I loved the way in which the author explained in scientific, yet laymans terms, the workings of a car during a race. Valves, fuel, exhaust, shocks, ventilation, even the importance of the paint job and the "wrapping" of decals on the body and how they affect the aerodynamics of the car in motion. These "Good Old Boys" are as smart as they are witty.
You'll learn the effects of banking angles or degrees on different tracks. How the smallest adjustments to tires, shocks, control arms helps or hinders cornering performance at high speed.
The safety factors for the drivers that have progressed through the years; suits, helmets, Nomex gloves, body restraints, ventilation, etc. A myriad of subjects within subjects. Top notch information for any NASCAR or Physics fan. This is one class that won't bore you or put you to sleep.

Customer Review: As the author of "Go Ahead - Take the Wheel" which discusses how to begin racing, the Speed Secrets series is what I recommend to people as the next purchase in their racing libary. This book is written in a very friendly manner and does not get too bogged down in very technical discussions that might be challenging for a novice to racing. When looking at the various racing books I own, these always stand out. I guess that's why this is one of only a very few I recommended in the "Additional Resources" section of my book.

At first, it's tempting to brush off this work as yet another picaresque morality tale, but to do so would be to deprive oneself of a truly transcendental reading experience.
The tale is told in retrospect, as McQueen looks back upon his life addicted to speed. McQueen is a racecar, you see, a young fool whose heart is set solely on winning the race, any race, anywhere, at any cost. Berrios's prose leads us to envision the late night excesses of the young car, tasting the fruits of fame and riches, guzzling oil by the barrel, burning rubber on nameless, abandoned parking lots, constantly proving himself against some nameless foe.
"I used to think racing was everything," says McQueen, as he cuts a swath of devastation in his wake during one particular race. What is it that motivates him? What is it that causes this self-destructive behavior? In his genius, Berrios never reveals it. Customer Review: Its no surprise that while baseball/basketball/and football games are usually playing to semi-packed crowds, NASCAR is continually selling out short tracks and superspeedways that hold 160,000 people.
NASCAR is exciting. And contrary to the naysayers, it requires a lot of skill and knowledge of not only racing, but engineering, aerdoynamics, and overall car mechanics.
But where and when did NASCAR start? Neal Thompson does a great job in tracing back the early days of southern automobile racing in the 30s and 40s when the sport was led by whiskey runners who drove moonshine from the small towns of dawsonville and dahlonega down to the bigger city of Atlanta. Thompson reveals the lives of some of these drivers (Lloyd Seay, Roy Hall, Red Byron, Fonty Flock), mechanics (Red Vogt) and car owners (Raymond Parks) showing the glorious and not-so glorious moments for each of the early stars in driving.
A large part of this book focuses on the man credited with starting the organization of NASCAR: Mr. Bill France. France made his move from an okay driver to an outstanding and often times dirty promoter for the sport of racing. The book chronicles the trials France had to deal with when starting NASCAR (competition with other racing leagues, accidents at the races, financial problems).
The book also shows how some tracks got started (Atlanta Lakewood Speedway, Daytona Beach and Road Course, Charlotte Speedway, Columbus Speedway and more)
Driving with the Devil is truly fascinating. The beginning of NASCAR was fueled with competition, wild characters, and some truly great stories.
I would highly recommend this book to the NASCAR fan looking to read about the history of the sport.
